Usually 34-36 degrees total mechanical advance works good, if you can achieve that with 12-16 degrees initial you should be in good shape.

I'm at 10 degrees initial,36 in by 3500,but run aluminum heads.
I went through a learning curve in that my cooling system wasn't up to the task and started out with only 8 degrees initial and the stock distributer springs for a total of only 28 degrees.Pulled fine,never pinged once I put in the aluminum radiater.

I just had my rad recored and it seems to run cool in my garage. I am currrently timed at 4. If I set the timing at 8 or 10 am I going to have a cooling problem? Engine sounds great.

When I fired up the 406 in July it was 95 degrees in the shade.I could idle for 20 minutes without a problem(after the cam break in),but when I drove the car and actually put the engine under load,the temps would creep up.Due to extra internal friction on the new motor( rings sealing on new cylinder walls),10:1 cr and the level of power I was making,I had a cooling system problem.
I systematicly tried to correct the problem.First tried reduced timing,and a distributer rebuild.Then the Griffen radiator.The radiater keeps the temps at 190 in July,now I'm lucky to see 140 degrees.
I don't know what your combination is,but you can't hurt the engine running too little timing,you can with too much.Tweak at will,but I'd recommend a slow break in process,so you can document and share what you find as fact.
When you change ten things at a time and finally arrive with a perfect comination,how do you know what tweak worked?I change only one variable at a time and drive the car for a week or so before I move on to the next thing.
Good luck with the 406,I'm sure you'll love it once it's dialed in. :cheers:

Looking outside tonight at the blizzard is depressing. It's going to be a few more months before I can get the car on the road. The joys of snow.
