Wicked! Computer reset itself to the Year 1601 on boot-up...
I don't have a clue what happened today, but when I got home tonight to check e-mail my Pentium 4 2.4Ghz 'puter automatically told me that my date was wrong and would not go any further until I reset it. I wonder if there is any significance to the date/year of January 11, 1601 because that is what it went back to? And after I changed it and booted up it decided I needed to reinstall all of the programs that came about after 1601 with windows popping up and access to the internet to download zonealarm.... mcafee was the next window to upload... and a few others. I stopped all those processes and Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot and everything came up normal like nothing ever happened. A virus scan found nothing as I suspected since I do one every night before shutting it down. Guessing Micro-Bill's & Intel's stuff can go buggy at times.

Very strange. Computer time is expressed as time since 1/1 1970, so it shouldn't even be possible to have it think it is before that.

Don't know what to think about that. But, mine decided that the world isn't the right color so now I see everything though rose colored glasses. Anything that was white is now a rosy color. I guess its time for a new computer, this ones from 1997.

The date is set in the BIOS during the boot process before the OS loads. Typically the date is lost when the CMOS battery dies, but that would be unusual for such a new computer.

I have seen it before chalk it up to a defective battery. If the battery goes bad some motherboard will keep he time until power is lost to it (unpluged, power outage, etc..) Have seen other that once the battery goes out it loses the time every time the PC is turned off.
However have never seen one ask to reinstall programs, kind of makes wonder if its a bug. Been doing this sense 1989 but see new stuff all the time.

Lets do the time warp yeah, it's just a boot to the left, and a re-boot to the right ... :lolg:

That's weird! We've got 3 PC's and 2 Macs on line at work. The new G-4 Mac went beserk and reset it's time to 1904....screwing up all the programs in the process. Also, the older Mac reset it's time to Aug. 28 1956! What gives?

Being such a new computer, I'd replace the battery on the motherboard, bery inexpensive fix. Next I'd go to http://www.grisoft.com & download their free anti-virus software. I've had great luck so far & it found a worm that Norton never detected ;) .
