Default Good deal on a 400 block?

Well, the 383 project has been updated to a 406 project :D :reddevil
I spent some time talking to my engine guy today and he talked me into a 406. I had been talking to him some months ago about trying to find me a 400 block, he had found one with a friend of his (another shop). So he called to see if he still had it. He actually had two Standard Bore 2 bolt blocks. I told him i'd take one. The cost:

$100

Came by later in the afternoon and the block was there. It has already been hot tanked, cleaned, checked for cracks and is ready to machine!
I picked up some ARP 200,000psi Main Studs for it tonight so the mains can be honed, and the rest of the machine work under way.
Add this to the complete retrofit roller cam setup i got for $375 and its been a GREAT week. :yesnod:

Just got back from the shop, its the "509" 2 bolt block. :yesnod:

If you don't have a crank for it yet why not go bigger than 406. Say 415, 421 or even 427.

Cost consideration is the primary reason, but I will look into it. Thanks.

Gordonm; The sound of a 427 sb gives me wood. :yesnod:

VETDRMS; I actually applied for license plates that were the same as your name and the state turned it down.

Tominator I think I am going to stick with a 406, i have to keep it clear that this is a street motor, it is way to easy to get carried away with all the big numbers, and then you end up with a killer motor that is next to useless on the street. :smash: My goal is 500ft/lbs 500hp.
That's hilarious about the plates, I got the plates "VETDRMS" when I was 18, the lady gave me a funny look but didn't say anything. A few days prior to getting my I had a really cool dream about driving it around, when i woke up and i started laughing, indeed I had a VETDRM, it just stuck and its going to stay. I've had older women actually scowl at me, and my ex girlfriends mom hated it....hehehe :reddevil

Your telling me!!! this whole project started out as a simple head change to some iron eagles! *shrug* Its fun, and rewarding, so it is definietly worth it. I want to get kicked off a track...11. :reddevil

Same deal here. The machinist I use is an old geaser thats been racing for a century, and the 383 got turned into a 406 because of him.
Check out the buildup article on my website. That's what got me started!
Try to avoid the BIBS(Bigger is better syndrom) for a street engine and you won't be disappointed!

Travis it looks like we're both going to have big bore small blocks in our identical cars this summer :D ! You seem to be getting much better deals though ;) .

SmokedTires Yes, so it seams  I can't wait to see how yours turns out, i only wish my budget permited the extent to which your going!
Luckily i've gained some friends on the inside loop for getting parts. :yesnod: I was looking at the brodix heads your running, but i think they would be way to big for my application. The AFR 195's should put me over the 500 mark. My CR will be ~10:8:1. Hopefully this won't be too high for premium. I am a bit concerned with the rear end, so i'll be replacing all the new u joints with some spicer units.

Your compression should be fine on pump gas, just don't go crazy with the timing & you should be fine. 500hp should be realistic for your 406 with the AFR heads :yesnod: . BTW, I too wish I had the budget for the extent that I'm going, I don't know if it's a labor of love or a curse for me :banghead: .
