Original VIN tag
All,
This message is more geared towards members in Canada, however please feel free to reply... I bought a 1970 convertible 2 years ago, and am currently getting a frame-off restoration done to it.
When I bought the car, the original VIN tag was not on the car, however, there was a tag from the Government of Quebec (I live in Montreal) which has the VIN number on it. It's about a half inch wide, and about the length of a real VIN tag... All the numbers on the car match...
My question is if anyone knows how I can go about to get (legally) an original looking VIN tag instead of the one that's there now...
Is there any way, if I contact the Department of Motor Vehicle that I can get one, or will they just give me the runaround...
Thanks in advance...

Re: Original VIN tag (my1970conv)
I don't believe you can legally replace an original VIN tag. I think it must be re-tagged with an all new number. Help me out guys, does anyone know for certain? I think this came up once before.

Its my understanding that he is trying to replace a "replacement" tag, to an original looking tag. Hmmm, maybe call chevy craft and find out what they say.

Who is doing your frame off?
I know all the 'regular' Corvette shops in the Montreal area, and they each know where and how to get a repro VIN tag.

I bought a repo vin tag on e-Bay. Go under search and type in "vin decals". Several people usually sell them and I bought mine for $35.00. I'm not sure where they come from because as far as I was told they're illegal to reproduce. Hope that helps!
