[OT] Am I a lazy bastard ?
I am getting ready to go on a camping trip and my time to get stuff done is very minimal.
Right as we are getting ready, my truck, the one that is going to be pulling the camper for this weekend, decides to start leaking oil. Now it has had a small leak, but now it's getting bigger. I don't want to deal with a leaking truck for 700 miles out in the middle of no where this weekend, so I figure it needs to be taken care of.
It's the rear main seal on the motor --- :cuss :nonod: :cry
Normally if I had a few days to work on this after work, I would just grit my teeth and do it. Pull that damn pan, lay under all that dripping oil and hope that the seal doesn't leak again and I get to do it over.
Nope, this time I called a shop and they said they would do it for $175 ish.
Am I a lazy bastard for paying $175 for a job I could do my self?
Or am I being smart in knowing that it will be done same day, by professionals, with a warranty and that I will have peace of mind on my trip?
(If my dad were answering this, he would say I was a lazy bastard, but then he doesn't have to crawl under the truck either.)

Re: [OT] Am I a lazy bastard ? (BSeery)
And for my 1000th post ( - me get pink starts now!) ...
I personally prefer to leave the messy PITA jobs for the professionals. For $175, I'll be happy to let someone else do the work while I sit with my feet up enjoying a beer - ESPECIALLY if pressed for time.
That is $175 well spent.
I believe in doing a job yourself when - you cannot afford to have someone do the work, or you have the time and really enjoy doing it yourself.

If it was on my 'vette I'd do it myself, if it was my truck...then I'd be more than glad to have Bubba's garage do it. :D

dam, dude, if you're in that big a hurry let the pro's do it. Otherwise, you are guaranteed a visit from Murphy at the worst possible time (of course!).
Now, remember that oil is pretty cheap even at $1.50 a quart, I'd consider driving the darn thing and checking the oil at every pee break (which would be once an hour if traveling with women).

Let the pros do it, at least if they screw it up, you again get to watch somebody else with the oil dripping on their head. :lolg:

Whew -- I am glad that everyone seems to agree on this one.
I will be sooooo damn happy when this thing stops peeing on the ground everywhere I park.
If it keeps it up, I am going to have to re-badge it to a Harley Davidson Edition Ford. :jester

BSeery...
Sometimes it's completely worth it to let someone else do the work. What do you think the following would cost at your local mechanic with you supplying the parts?
1) Front end rebuild - tie rods, ball joints, a-arm bushings, idler arm
2) Install new shocks - front & back
3) Install new calipers, brakes, lines & bleed system
4) Pull radiator & install new aluminum version
5) Install new rear mono-leafspring
6) Pick up car on trailer & deliver it back to me.
I can do most of this stuff at a *zero* dollar rate, so I told a mechanic who is just looking for some sideline work that I would pay $600-$700 to have it done. He accepted to do it for $650 just to not be bored. I'll let the forum members in the Houston area know how it works out. Granted, this is just a break time for this C-3 mechanic to do this, but I will gladly give my views when it is all over with either way.

You either have $$ or time, only a lucky few get to have both. If you have the $$ pay someone else to do it and enjoy the time you save so you can do something else you like to do.

When I'm faced with a quadry like this, I ask, How much money is my time worth. Then figure out how much time and aggrevation it will be. then determine if it is worth the few extra bucks for a pro to do it.
In your case, Id pay the cash.

Heck naw!! I don't think you're lazy. Just 2 weeks ago I took my daily driver Chevy K10 to my favorite shop for rear u-joint replacement. It was well worth the $101.65, bleve me!!
