This is just a mock-up using old rear storage doors. But if the if the centre door bin is taken out the amp seems to fit. I cannot remember what is below the bin (if anything) but presumably a support framework could be constructed fairly simply. That area is just next to power source (direct to battery) and I believe fairly well ventilated with the bin removed. And thoughts on this?

That is exactly what I have done. I used an amp of only about 50W. I got a little fancy in that I made new doors for all three compartments. The middle one is just enough of a frame to attach the hinge and latch mechanism, then the center of that is made up of a perforated metal that I used to suspend the amp from, while providing ventilation. The two outer doors are made of medium density fiberboard and have been cut out for 6 X 9 speakers. By using 3/4 inch think material, then top mounting the speakers, they don't use up a lot of space in the one compartment, and clear the battery in the other. They also have the hinges and latches. The one area that gave me fits was all the electrical noise that the system picked up. About 95% of that was resolved with the addition of a passive filter that I got at a local Circuit City store. With everything painted and upholstered to match the black interior, the mods are not too eye-catching, which is what I wanted it all to look like. From what I can see of your amp in the picture, yours is larger than the one I used. Mine came from Crutchfield at a time when they sold smaller amps than they have now.

I'm lucky that my 80 has the two door option. I mounted two amps to the storage compartment lid. Mounting one in the center looks like a good solution also.

I don't have an in dash tuner anymore, since I use the space for additonal gauges. I use a PDA with an MP3 player for tunes and just plug this into a cable that goes to a small equalizer in the glove box. The two channels in to the equalizer are then 4 channels out for front a rear with fader that goes to the two amps.

I didn't use the stock doors, I made up custom doors just for this conversion. The middle one is made of plastic with a metal insert to suspend the amp, and the two outer ones are a composite wood product. I would have to go out and check on what brand of amp I used. I'll look at it tomorrow.

I put mine there in the 70s. The amps I have put there will not fit through the lid opening. By removing the tray & sliding in from the other compartments works great. Ideal loc.!

I built a shelf to put my Alpine amp on in the passenger side bin. The reason for the shelf is that if any water gets in due to leaving my top down, the amp will not be sitting in it.

I have a small amp mounted vertically in the passenger side bin.

As an aside, make sure that you allow some ventilation or you may be replacing the amp frequently. :yesnod: Ask me how I know. :lol:

On my 82 (two bins) I installed mine where the jack used to be. :)
I mounted the jack & lug wrench into the rear bumper near the spare tire. I've got to crawl under there to get the spare any how.

I have the same JVC head you do. I only power my 6x9 in the back with the amp. My 4x6 in front are direct.

Paul, I think that amp will fit just right.. You can probally get it under the door and still be able to close the lid. In that bin (at leas on my 78, which should not be that diffrent from your 79) is just a hump from the rear end. You should be able to fit that little amp in there nicley.

I am planning on putting a 8" sub in the jack compartment. Which is much biger, but that middle compartment will fit that amp just right (if you want send me the measurements and I will check tonight for you).

On my 76 (before it was totalled), I had a 10" sub that I built into the passenger side compartment.



I used expanding foam to seal up everything around the box that I built.

It worked great, but it was a lot of work. :yesnod:

I mounted mine to the lid for two reasons:

1) It gives easy access to wiring and setting gain it needed.
2) With mounting to the lid, I still have room underneath to store other items. Even the plastic tray still fits in my 80.

To the NCRS comment and shaking the finger - **** off, it's my car and the 50K made will not make it a collector item. I've had my 1980 L82 of 5K made out of the 50K for 17 years.

All the orignal parts are in the attic and the L82 is in the corner of the garage (ZZ4 power now) I bought the car for fun.

That is a real concern to me. I was thinking of taking the innards of the glovebox out and mounting it in there. But I keep getting visions of a warped dashboard above.

Cannot that unit go in without removing the jack? And you have a PC cooling fan. How hot do these things get!

The NCRS comment was directed to me in jest. And I accept the ribbing :) .

Fastening the amp into the lid is a neat idea. Certainly worth a try. With the bin inplace below do you have any heat problems? I would imagine the airflow is limited.
