I pass by a land fill site or dump and they have a large tank that we can use to get rid of old oil. In the winter I also use it to start fires in the airtight.

I take it to O'Reilly's and dispose of it when I buy my oil and filter.

I'm the sick puppy using it for farm lube. Living in the sticks has it's advantages.

Dealing responsibly with the old oil is one of the reasons I never change my own oil anymore. Just too much hassle to take it down to the Quick Lube & I couldn't sleep at night if I just dumped it in a storm drain or something. For $25, it's worth it to me to have someone else get messy and deal with the used oil (not to mention, used oil is a carcinogen that you really don't want on your skin, anyway).

Most states have laws requiring any business selling oil to accept used oil free of charge. I have a 15 qt drainpan and whenever it gets full I just take it down to autozone and empty it.

I don't view dealing with used motor oil as being any sort of hassle. Around here Autozone and Kragen auto parts stores, Jiffy Lube, and even the county maintenance shop accept oil. When we lived in Oregon it was even easier - the garbage man also picked up recyclables every week. It didn't seem to take a lot of effort to carry a milk jug of old oil out to the curb.

I also like to change my own fluids because I know I'm doing the job right. Unlike some Quicky Lube places I've been to, I've never stripped the threads in the drain hole. :nono:

Our town dump has a place for used motor oil. Old antifreeze..... on the other hand, they make it such a hassle (1 day every other month at alternating sites around the county!!!) I have flushed it down the toilet! (It became too dangerous storing it in my garage) :mad :mad :mad :mad MJ

Our transfer station (dump) has a huge oil recycling tank. I dump mine there.

I'm intrigued witt the wood stove use. What do you guys do - soak some wood with it - or pour it right over like maple syrup ?

:iagree:
It's a federal law.

Far cry from when I grew up and they used to pour it on our gravel roads to keep the dust down. UMMMM I can just taste it seeping into our well.

I take it to one of the local auto shops when I've filled my 5 gal. bucket.

The local dump takes anti-freeze and just about everything else.

Lots of heath problems are related to petroleum products contaminating water supplies :U
