macco paint job
My 81 is in need of a new paint job. The problem is the cost. I am going to sell this one has anyone ever had one of those 500$ specials. Or is this something to stay away from and why

Re: macco paint job (Darron)
I actually had a Macco paint job turn out really well. I paid 350.00 dollars for it and no one believes it. I would imagine it really depends on the shop that is doing it. I had mine done in Boise. Make sure you tape your rims though.

I had they paint my car for almost $1000 my date in small claims is 3/11/03
if you did the prep and prime it might be ok and pick the shop in your area
that is the newest and cleanest or you will be sorry

I think it does depend on the shop, being unhappy with a $500 job is a LOT better than not being completly satisfied with a $9000 job....
don't ask :banghead: :reddevil

I kind of want to get one of those paint jobs, better than what I have now. My friend got his Honda painted there. It really is a $500 job. You can still see a little bit of the previece color around the window a little, under the gas door and hood, maybe some paint that ran down the side. Basically I would bring them my car stripped of all the trim, then let them paint it.

I had a Firdbird Formula painted by Maaco years ago.Sides looked like orange peal, hood and roof OK.Seams the next week they were hiring painters. No experience required, will train the right individual.
If cost is that important,my advice to you would be to wait till you can afford it. It is infinately harder to remove a poor paint job, than to prep and paint a never before painted car.

Re: macco paint job (Darron)
I just had my Blazer painted by Macco 2 weeks ago and they did a great job for $299 with a 2 year warranty. I took the chrome off and wet sanded the whole thing before I took it to them which I'm sure made their job a little easier. I know they acted like they appreciated that I had done that.
It is important to try and talk with someone who has used the shop you are looking at. This particular Macco shop came to me as highly recommended while a couple of Macco's closer to my home didn't have a very good reputation. Just like mechanics and things - their are good ones and bad ones.

Re: macco paint job (79 Midnight Blue L82)
I have used Maaco once...for a daily driver that I didn't feel I needed to pay 5 or 6 grand to have repainted. I had them 2-stage it. I picked out a custom paint color I liked and took it to them. They duplicated it, sanded, primed and repainted my driver for $1400. Not bad. It's not completely a good paint job, there's a fiber in the paint on one side, but nothing that can't be wet-sanded out. Like I said, it's a driver, does not need to be perfect. From 20 feet away it looks gorgeous.
I'd really think twice about painting a Corvette there, unless it's a particularly good painter there that you already know about. They are basically a mass production assembly line paint shop. Best place to go on a budget...but don't expect show quality paint.

no way would I let them do mine. I beleive it depends on shop and people. But locally, it would appear, you get what you pay for. Mine was done by a pro, I am happy with $$$$ I spend. :smash:

I had my '75 painted there in '90, and it still looks nice. They did it for $385.

I can't say I haven't thought about taking my vette to them. Of course, I would do all the prep work and have the car painted the same original color (black)...

Re: macco paint job (Simon Alexander)
Will Macco shoot clear coat on their paint jobs or are they limited to the basics? Granted... it takes another prep job to get the clear coat right, but enough stuff to work with for water sanding can create miracles with even the worst paint jobs.

Re: macco paint job (bgrice)
I agree that if you do your own prep work and get thier top of the line paint it will come out well. The only thing is to check thier work that is coming out of the shop first. It will vary from shop to shop. They painted my vette and had to take it back twice because of runs in the clear and burn through on the buffing. Also keep in mind rubber bumper cars really need that flexing agent on the bumpers to keep from cracking and macco probably wont do this. All in all Im 85% satisfied with my macco job on the 82.
