The old "Do I need a spare question"
I'm considering not putting it back. Heck the thing was flat anyway and I don't even have a jack. Will triple A bring you a spare? Or should I just put some of that green stuff tire sealer in the jack box?

AAA will not bring you a spare, but they will tow you for free up to 5 miles with the basic service and with the premium it is a lot more.
Ditch tne spare.

I've been without my spare for quite a while now.
I have a couple of cans of Fix-A-Flat, a cell phone, and Emergency Roadside Assistance with my insurance.
I swear I could "feel" a difference in accelleration after losing all that weight.
It's much easier to get to the diff fill plug, lights, and the rear suspension components with it out of the way.
Until I do some serious cleaning up back there, I think it looked better with the tire carrier on. My exhaust is black, so it's not terribly noticeable, but almost everything else has surface rust back there. When I do clean things up, I imagine it'll look better without the spare, but for now :skep:
Some people worry about structural integrity in the event of a rear impact. I guess that could be a problem, but I don't really worry about it.
Just some thoughts.

Re: The old "Do I need a spare question" (Red73)
Just took mine off when I was home last week. Also got the surface rust off and repainted most of the metal with Rustoleum (1 or 2 coats primer, 2 coats flat black). It got a little dirty on the way back to school, but I wish I had pics, because it looks great. I need to get some high temp paint to do the mufflers and brake parts... (and so it starts)
Anyway, back on topic, I plan to put it back on for long trips. If you're worried about the gas tank getting hit by something, you can leave on the plastic top part of the carrier for a little extra safety.

Bud:
I've been without a spare for a while. I threw two cans of "fix-a-flat" behind the passenger seat and am good to go. I believe I saved around 50lbs or so by ditching the spare tire and carrier.

Like everyone else here I ditched my spare 13 years ago. Put 1 can of fix a flat and a cell phone and I don't worry about it. Even in my daily driver truck I don't carry a spare.

I only carry my spare when im venturing farther away from home for trips and stuff. I still keep the carrier and cover in place since Ive heard it helps wash air from underneath the rear. Most of the time we are close to home and I can rescue. When far from home I feel more comfortable with a spare onboard in case of cut tire that would be impossible to repair. If I get a flat on the rear Ill swap a tire from the front to keep the tire diameter the same and not to wear out my posi. My spare is 27.5 dia. and my tires are 26.1

1 can of fix a flat
If it's not a particularly large can, you may want to carry two.
I had to use one on my son's 205/75-15 tire and it barely brought it back to half full.

Re: The old "Do I need a spare question" (70 LS1)
I have roadside assistance on my insurance policy. I just call a number and the lowboy must arrive within one hour. I cannot remember the price, but it was sorta cheap if I remember correctly.
I have used it with my truck a few times and it works great.
