I wiped down the pistons with oil but I am wondering if I should should lightly sand the spots with 600 or 1200 grit paper.

Do not put grit into your engine. Just oil the heck out of the cylinders and pistons then cover/wrap the engine with plastic.

:iagree: spray it with fogging oil and don't worry about it. First time you fire it up it will be gone.

If you want to keep the cylinders rust free just wipe them down with wheel bearing grease. The pistons should be aluminium (shouldn't they) I never had pistons that rusted. :auto:

KJL did you have a blown head gasket? Sounds like rust deposited from evaporated/steam coolant. If your worried about preserving the cylinder walls an engine builder told me transfluid works best for this. Trans fliud will protect for a long time and burn off when engine is started. Deposites on the piston tops is best left alone unless its big enough to pull off with a pliers. :nono:

No blown head gasket though I did have a small leak between 4 & 6, No coolant just gas. I wiped out the cylinders after removing the heads, we had a freak 70 degree HUMID day on Saturday. Because every thing in my garage was still fairly cold, moisture condensed on everything, the floor was wet, not to mention my engine block. I cleanded out the cylinders and wiped them down with Lubriplate assembly lube. I put the new heads on last night. I should be firing it up in about 2 weeks. Thanks to all for your help. :hurray:
