how can i tell if my engine is original?

Engine stamps can be "faked", but part of the number stamped on a pad at the top, passenger-side of the block should match the production number of your VIN (the last 5 numbers).

Look at your VIN # on either your title or windshield pillar post. The last five digits will match the last 5 digits of the one number that starts 19S4xxxxx. The OTHER number on the engine pad will be like V 0403 ZAA for example. This would be V=Flint engine plant, 0403=April 3(date engine was assembled by Flint engine plant), ZAA=engine suffix code for an L-48 engine with a 4spd. This is "just" an example.
