How 2 ID which rear end on a '70
Since I can't seem to find the tank sticker, how can I figure out which rear-end is on this 1970 I just got. I didn't know if the housing number (3871375) would ID it or not.
Any ideas?
I'm in my coveralls right now doing the oil change, and I figured that as long as I was under the car, I might as look. The other thing: the frame looks great! No scaling or rust anywhere, and that Richmond 6 speed is a nice looking unit.
Thanks!
Sam

sammyb, You might try the easy way, jack up the car and rotate a tire one turn while counting the pinion/driveshaft revolutions. ...redvetracr

There is an alphanumeric ID on the differential. Such as AAxxxx, ABxxxx. The letters designate the rearend such as 3.08, 3.55, 3.73, 4.11 etc etc.
Sorry, I do not have the conversion in front of me. But I can forward to you when I get home or maybe someone on the forum has them in their head.

According to:
Cars & Parts Magazine, Catalog of Corvette ID Numbers, 1953 - 1993, here is how you identify your rear axle for a 1970:
THE REAR AXLE NUMBER identifies the gear ratio, the build month and day and the plant where it was assembled. The code is located on the bottom of the differential carrier housing by the cover.
EXAMPLE: CAK 0621 W
CAK = 3.36
06 = June
21 - 21st day of the month
W = Warren Plant
Here are other ratio codes:
CAL or CAT or CAV - Positraction 3.08
CAM or CAU or CLR - Postitraction 3.36
CAN or CAZ - Positraction 3.55
CAO or CAS - Positraction 3.70, 350 Hi-Performance, 4-speed Closed Ratio
CAP or CFB- Positraction 4.11
CAW - Positraction 3.08, 4-Speed Automatic
CAY - Positraction 2.73
CAX - Positraction 3.36, 4-Speed Automatic
CFA - Positraction 3.70
CFC - Positraction 4.56
Other plant codes:
G- Chevrolet Gear and Axle
B - Buffalo
Hope this helps.
