Default What punishment do you get for cheating the EPA's test?

I was reading hunt4cleanair's smog poll post and wondered...
I have this friend, who wants to, um, cheat the epa on the emissions tests.
Would I-, I mean, would he be able to "sell" his title over to his buddy in another county (where epa hasn't gotten to yet) within the same state?
I guess this would also entail putting additional names on the insurance policy.

I'm guessing insurance fraud would be included in the charges against you when you get busted. But what other charges can you guys think of??

Maybe putting headers with straight pipes would be worth a lil' danger...
Or even better, chrome/ ceramic headers w/sidepipes.

Do you really want to transfer legal ownership of your vette, just to sneak some sidpipes ?

Just get it inspected with a good smog system and switch it over to the pipes for the rest of the season.

Yeah I know, don't do the crime, if you etc. etc.

I just wanna be able to build as high as I can dream

I was scared after my 383 buildup that I wasn't gonna pass emissions.
I thought I could legally change my address to a p.o. box or something and be able to skirt the system. Luckily, I passed with flying colors! But I don't think that we can get away with too much nowadays in the internet age.

Knowingly defeating emission controls COULD cost up to $10k per if they wanted to press the issue. I don't know about the paperwork scams.

:iagree: Im going to have a stock 2-1-2 setup for testing, then i'll throw on the turbo 2-1-2 setup for the rest of the driving season. but i would bet money that my engine would pass with flying colors with no cats, and no smog pump. i got it tested a few months back and it didnt even regester on one of the tests. the other it was waaaaaay low. luckly i can go get it tested at my old auto-tech for free.

I thought about this little gem once to get around the Kalifornia Smog *****:

"Sell" my car to my father-in-law who lives in an area in Oregon with NO SMOG CHECK at all. Register it up there and get tags--no problem, I'll just get a couple of Jeg's catalogs sent to me at his address and pay his electric bill for a month so I can have a statement to "prove" residency. The have him "loan" the car back to me so I can work on it for him in Kalifornia. All nice and legal.

The problem is that Kalifornia has a "Narc on Your Neighbor" program that will put a few bucks in the pocket of anybody who turns in somebody who's doing this. But that's OK. As long as it's CARS that are harming The Children(tm) and not diesel truck exhaust, airports, restuarants, backyard grills, and companies with "pollution credits" to burn.

Would your friend rather make license plates then buy them?

Does your friend like dropping the soap in the public shower?

If he can answer yes to any of the above questions, tell him to go for it.

If he answers yes to question #2 you might want to look for another friend.
