Why do my friends' cars suck?
Another topic for forumers with multiple toys got me thinking about this. Before I sold my '92 Camry and started looking for my next car, I had never driven a single fun car. Well, I've driven my dad's '64 Nova once. Everyone seems to have friends and family with classics and fun, expensive new things. My dad and I are the only 2 in my family (including very extended family!) that have interesting cars, and every single one of my friends have some Buick/Subaru POS. I just thought I'd whine a little here, and see if anybody else has this problem? I recently joined the car club on campus here, other than a '76 Camino, it's looking pretty barren. What to do?
I've driven:
1964 Chevy2Nova (Dad teaching me to operate a manual)
1974 Camaro (Not-so-great condition, test drive same day I discovered my baby!)
My '77!
Wow, short list.
Still despairing but I feel better now! :D

Hmmm.. Let's see... Friends have let me drive a '72 Vette w/ 540... BMW 328, 95 TA (modded), 68 Camaro, several 2nd gen f-bods, a 3rd gen f-bod... Several modded 4th gen f-bods... GF drives a 96 LT4 Vette.... Oh yeah, another friend let me drive his Porsche 911... List goes on. I guess I'm good.
Wildest one was when I went to get the mail in my Vette and started talking to a guy with a Ferrari 348. All of a sudden he says I should take it for a spin and tosses me the keys. He didn't even go with me.

I know exactly what you mean. My friends don't have any cool cars either, but then again I'm 22 and got my Vette when I was 18.
My dad has a '67 Sting Ray.... will be mine someday since he doesn't do anything with it. Then the rest of my family has pickups mostly. That's about it.

Most of my friends have pretty cool cars. Cappy has 8t1, he let me drive it...(don't tell Norris though :) ). Norris has a new Z28, very cool car. Scott has a Z06, he let me drive it, awesome car!!! That is my 3 best friends probably.

Zwede- Im moving to your neighborhood. None of my neighbors have anything fun or cool like that!!!
My friend with the "coolest" car has a blue pearl metallic 72 Chevelle w/ camelback head 350, built up TH400, tunnel ram, dual holley 650 DPs, pretty wild cam, and 4.11s with Hoosier DOT drag radials. I think it is a 12 second car-dont recall for sure.

Unfortunately he got broadsided by a full sized Chevy truck. He's OK now but the car is still not back together. I have a few other buds with 2nd gen Camaros and one with a old Porsche. None compare to that Chevelle though-what a ride that was.

Yeah, all of my friends have transportation cars. One kid I know has a '70 Skylark, but it isn't very nice, or fast. Other than that all the cars aren't cool. Strangely, I won't win for "Coolest Car" this year for the yearbook. Probably one of the rice burners or some Grand Prix or something that some kids parent's bought him.

"and every single one of my friends have some Buick/Subaru POS"
What's your problem with Buick and Subaru?
You should consider yourself lucky that your friends have enough taste to drive a Buick or Subaru, and don't think a CRX hatchback or four cylinder Ford Probe with a double decker wing (two in my town) is cool.

My friends have some pretty cool cars:
'80 Camaro (street car, went 11.60s, soon to be 500+ci) - road in it
'94 Mustang (street car, 11.50 @ 126mph, soon to be 600+ ci) - road in it
'86 Mustang (street car, 347 stroker)
'72 Duster (street car, 383, 12.80s)
'90 S10 (street car, 327) - road in it
'69 (I think) Challenger (drag car, 10.90 @ 122mph)
'67 Camaro (drag car, 9.30s, 500 + ci, soon to be alcohol)

Well, it also works the other way. I always wonder about the personality of someone who drives a biege 4-door Buick :) What does that say about them? Boring maybe :) I refuse to drive/own a 4-door car. They are boring.
So, what does that tell you about your friends? Time for some new ones, right? :D

Used to be in the same predicament. My friends had Camrys and whatnot. The nice thing was, I was king of the hill.
Then I met my friend Mike, who has a 92 LT1 'vette, 71 Jag XKE, 61 Morgan Super Sport, BMW Z3 and now a 2k2 Z06. (Not to mention other cars.) My car lost quite a bit of the spotlight.
It all went downhill from there. My car is just a smudge compared to most of my friend's cars.

Re: Why do my friends' cars suck? (RUXperienced)
I can't say that many of my friends have cool cars. One has an'87 camaro that looks better than showroom with about $3k of stereo. His dad has a Dodge Stealth w/ a 6-speed. Before I got my vette that was the 'funnest' car I drove. It brings tears to my eye everytime my dad tells me about the cars he had through his younger life: '57 Chevy Bel Air, '63 Impala, '69 Malibu, '67 Impala. For some reason after all of those he switched to K-Cars and minivans. He had some lame excuse, something about kids. Its pretty sad that most of the cars nowdays won't ever really be 'fun cars' or one's that you look back at in 20 years saying, "Boy I wish I had held onto that ______. (insert whatever boring 2nd car you own now)"
My rides since high school have been the, oh so sexy '86 four door Cavalier, and the lightning fast '91 Geo Prism. But hey, 40mpg was nice in college.
What will next generations collectors and enthusiasts have to work with??

Re: Why do my friends' cars suck? (RUXperienced)
Go easy on your friends, guys. Maybe the've just never driven a real car. My wife used to be content with her Ford Country Squire wagon (you know: The last of the great land yachts). Then I got her a '93 Jaguar XJ6 (not a real sports car, but hey, she's a lady). Now she says she just loves to drive around simply for the fun of it. My teenage daughters are learning early. I got them a 1990 Chrysler Maserati TC. Not so much power that they'll get into trouble, but a heck of a lot of fun. Life's too short to drive a boring car, and if you know what you're looking for, you can get some pretty neat used ones for much less than a new yawner.
And, ah yes, I do wish I still had that yellow and black 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T convertible.

I think my 89 Buick Park Ave driver is pretty cool for a sedan.
Here are the reasons:
1) clam shell hood - like my vette
2) electric moon roof - used daily in lieu of 'vette Ttops
3) seating for 6 - sometimes you need it
4) fiber optics - like my 70 vette should have
5) 4 wheel independent suspension - like my vette
6) 3.8l/overdrive - enough power to spin 'em up (225s) but get good mileage
7) electronic diming rear view mirror - way cool
8) incredibly smooth and quiet ride - you can hear the tunes
Hmm - if I think harder - I can get a top 10 list. :seeya
