What Brand Motor Oil Do You Use?
I am going to switch to Mobil 1 Synethic when I have 5K on the engine. Until then I need to do one change using regular oil.
So, what brand is a good one to go with?

I use regular Mobil oil. I plan on switching to Mobil one once the zz4 has some more mileage on it.

How come you guys are waiting a while before going to synthetic in your crate motors  . I plan on using the Royal Purple synthetic in my crate motor from the beginning, unless I'm misinformed, so please enlighten me :D . In my current stock 350, I use Valvoline Maxlife 10W-30 (red bottle) and a Mobil 1 filter

My engine was built locally by someone I know. He said wait until 5K to change to synethic. Considering he is giving me a 36/36 Warranty I am following his instructions.
Your question is a good one, and I too, don't fully understand the wisdom behind it. :skep:

i've heard it said that the synthetics are so slick that they dont allow the rings on a newly built motor seat in properly. Maybe thats why it good to go the first 800mi on HD straight 30 weight then to organic 10w-30 for the next 2000 or so, then to synthetic for life. dont know if its true or not...just what I heard.
Keep rpm's below 4000 for the first 800mi.

:withstupid: I heard the same thing about the oil being to slick. A few of my good friends who are into serious drag racing told me to wait. They suggest at least 3000-5000 miles on the motor before I switch to a full synthetic.

The C3 is the only vehicle I own that does not run Mobil1 (old seals & gaskets). It seems to like Castrol GTX, Chevron or Pennzoil 10W-40 or 20W-50 dinos at about 4000 mile or 6 month intervals. My oil anaylasis reports have been very good, so I'm sticking with this regime.

I use Mobil 1 10W 30. I put it in my engine 500 miles after I rebuilt it and I haven't had a problem yet. I like the cold cranking capability of the synthetic. Make sure the engine is tight because it seems the synthetics tend to leak if everything isn't just right.

Re: What Brand Motor Oil Do You Use? (OHSIXX)
I just switched to Mobil1 in an engine with about twenty five hundred K on it. Never really heard about the wear in time for the new parts but it seems to make total sense when you think about it. I was also told by an old motor head that the new synthetics are so slippery that if you run a good one for as few as 1000K, the internal parts get so coated and slick. you can go back to regular oil and still get the same benefits. Don't know fer sure so I'm sticking with the synthetic.

Re: What Brand Motor Oil Do You Use? (OHSIXX)
Duke Williams (SWCDuke) has made mention of the following: modern oils have had the quantity of detergent additives reduced as cars have gotten cleaner burning. Modern fuel injection, computer controlled ignition, and other modern hocus-pocus :D has really reduced the amount of contamination that reaches the oil. The down side is that our old inefficient smelly carbureted motors still need the old quantity of detergent additives. Duke recommends using a modern Diesel oil which meets current SAE requirements (CH-4 I think, but don't quote me).
Personally, I use Castrol GTX and change it yearly.

Re: What Brand Motor Oil Do You Use? (OHSIXX)
Just to throw another thing into the mix, what about blended oils during break in? Never heard anything pro or against break in on these. Probably safer to just break in on conventional oil and not risk it, but just brought it up as another possibility. My regular oil is Redline 10w40, it's expensive but I feel good knowing it's in there, unfortunately you have to order it from Summit or Jegs most of the time.

I use Mobil 1 5W 30 and a Mobil 1 filter in my 2001 F150. I go 5,000 miles between changes. My vette gets regular ol' Valvoline 10W 40 and an AC Delco PF 35 filter.
