Who else is doing a 700R4 swap.

Re: Who else is doing a 700R4 swap. (Budman78)
I'm lazy. I bought the whole thing from Bowtie. It works great. I've never had a repair or replacement that didn't cause some apprehension about whether everything was finished until I put in the 700R4 from Bowtie Overdrive. A couple of little things happened afterward, but I called Jason at Bowtie and he diagnosed them quickly and the fixes were really simple. Mostly my missunderstandings. The Bowtie crossmember clears up a lot of space under the Vette. Another side benefit was moving the emergency brake pully forword enough to regain some lost emergency brake adjustment.

I'm still trying to decide between a 700 and 200. I talked to Steve and he recommends a 700 because newer vettes have them, but I like the ease of install for a 200. But with 3.08 gears, the 700 might work out better. Joe

I removed the stock mount and had a big flate plate of steel welded to the the crossmember. We then drilled holes in the plate where the mounts lined up at and called it good.
If you have a welder at home, you can do it. If not, just buy the one from Bow Tie overdrives and save yourself the trouble. Just buy the whole install kit to make your life easier.

I honestly don't think there's a big deal in the difference between the gearing- I like the parts availability and widescale use of the 700R4. If I broke down in Death Valley, I'd be more likely to find a 700R4 expert at the local shop then a 2004R expert.
Also, the new 'vettes used 'em. Plus, they're stronger out of the box. And the new crossmember looks so cool! I definitely enjoy mine.

You have to be careful with 700r4 crossmembers. I bought the one from Bowtie. If you use a modified one, be certain your driveline geometry is correct. Most problems with having to "cut" the tunnel for clearance is caused by incorrect crossmembers.
I don't recall anybody installing a 700r4 with a bowtie crossmember having clearance problems (although I'm sure there is at least one who will chime in)
I remember somebody even had a problem with the fan hitting the shroud once with a modified cm.
One thing I wish I did beforehand was installing a different governor to change the shift points closer to 5200 on WOT -- bowtie sells one pretty cheap. Now I have to crawl under there...

i used my original crossmember with an adapter plate from bowtieod, about $90. they didn't have the new x-member offered when i did my conversion in spring 2000. i'm thinking about buying a new x-member, and then buying the "off road" only(yeah, right) dual exhaust system. when i had my conversion done, the exhaust shop had to bend the pipe around the right corner of the 700r4 and thru the x-member hole, and since my sytem was about toast they replaced it with a cat system, very restrictive but legal.

you dont need the crosmember. all you need is to make an L bracket that bolts to youy crosmember and a trans mount to bolt otthe trans. you should be able to get this made at any welding shop for $30 to $40 .

I'm thinking about cutting the ends off the 80's crossmember and welding the jegs set up to them.

Hey Joe, you've probably seen the other Bowtie :mad thread. But when I talked to Steve, he recommended the 700R4 for 3.36 and lower, and the 2004R for 3.55 and above. It all had to do with the low first gear in the 700R4 being totally unsuited to tall rear gears!
All things being equal and based on that, I'd go with the 700R4 in your case :yesnod:

When I got the 700 for the car, I was sure to get the original shift lever plate for the input shaft....measure the throw position, and compare to the best option of the lever plates from the old muncie....took the longest shift rod, and wedged the shifter into 3/4 position (as I recall) and hooked it to the tranny, modified the lever to fit the 'fatter' input shaft of the 700 and changed the length of the shift rod by adjusting it....spot on....looked like the original stock stick shift, exept the clutch was missing...
later on, I did a Hurst shift lever adaptation just for that 'cool' look...

Re: Who else is doing a 700R4 swap. (Road Racer)
Do you keep the same shifter or dose it have to be changed to a different one?
The shifter remains but re-indexed for the 4 speed. I got the small kit with replacement plastic bezel and small half-moon shaped metal indexer to be used with existing shifter. You have to drill the 2 spot welds out of the old 3-speed indexer in console (from passenger side) and spot-weld or bolt the new 4 speed in (drill two holes). Get small kit from Summit or Eckler, I got it from tranny shop. Install 4 speed indexer, together with "Painless Performance" lock up conversion relay Part 60109 for 700R4 TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER kit to control the lockup converter on overdrive transmission with carburetor.
I still have to change the 3-speed indexer and auto lock up that I will do this summer. Hope I answered your questions.

Bud-I have a '95 4L60E installed which is the same dimension as a 700. I drilled two tail shaft mounting holes further back on the cross member and used an '82 vette tail shaft along with the rubber mount and cut the drive line. I bought an 700 conversion indicatorkit from Eklers. It works great and saved a bundle.
