Default Anyway to fit a High Rise Under a Stock 76 Hood?

I have a 355 that I would like to put a Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake manifold on but I don't know if it'll fit under the stock L48 hood. If you have done it please e-mail me some pictures of your set up. What type of air cleaner would you use.

Sure. You could do a body lift like the 4x4 guys do :D , or just leave the hood open!

Seriously, your choices are very limited. Check the archives for a bunch of posts on this.

Any help here?

Hans

I believe Clink fit an RPM Air-Gap under his stock '69 hood with a drop base air cleaner. If he could fit it under a '69 hood, then you should be able to fit it under a '76 hood ('76 and later hoods had more clearence). I'm sure someone will chime in with a little more first-hand experience.

There are 2 options.. but both involve milling down your choke tower...

I use a 1 1/4 inch drop base and a 2 1/4 inch K&N filter. I use a racing carb that has no choke tower.. This setup didn't cost me too much because I used the drop base out of a $20 Holley air filter at Discount Auto Parts and ordered a 2 1/4 inch K&N filter element from Summit for $40.. The total setup cost me $60...

Another option would be to use a 2 inch drop base (over $100) and a 3 inch filter element..$50+ for a K&N 3 inch filter)...

Both setups require a carb with no choke tower or a milled down choke tower.. The reason is that you won't get enough air flow through the primaries because the tower is going to restrict air flow because of the low clearance between the top of the carb and the top of the air filter..

Hello Mr. Wicked
Don't see how a Performer RPM Air-Gap will fit but I plan to use the Performer (non RPM) Air-Gap with my stock cowl induction. My cam stops breathing over 5,000 rpm and this intake should work just fine for my combination.
I took a lot of hood to air cleaner measurements with the stock cast iron intake in the car using Playdoogh (it's more fun than clay). Then measured carb pad hieghts on both my stock iron and my new Performer Air-Gap. It should fit my stock induction hood if the air cleaner tub top ring is removed and a new seal is fabracated on the pan. My numbers were different from what Edlebrock advertizes but my math tells me the RPM gapper won't go with my stock cowl induction. I've seen a few posts with the RPM gapper but don't see how thier cowl induction could be working - a stock performance advantage I won't let go. :nono:

Corvette Black Book sez that '76 Hoods stand alone.....take no advice from others. I used a Weiand "Action Plus" Dual Plane intake (RPM's will fit also), and still had to trim the carb stud to fit.......GOOD LUCK

I too have heard that the '76 hood is special!

Edlebrock's catalog says that the RPM will NOT fit a Vette hood. On my car, I am using a Performer EGR manifold. Using a drop-base filter, it will take a 3 inch element but the wingnut rubs the hood insulation and the front of the filter is always covered with insulation when I lift the hood. :yesnod:

I use a tiny cheap wingnut when driving it, and a fancy schmancy big o'l wingnut when at a show with the hood up! :blueangel:
