Default Opinions please......

I want everyones views on this auction. I have herd this comment on many cars where you can't validate engine codes. Why would someone "shave off" the numbers. Is this for real or just another scam?

When the block gets "decked" the surface is trued up so that you have a good gasket seal. Think of it as the block being warped and you are trueing it up. It is fairly common to have it decked. It does remove the numbers on the pad also.

there is no reason you can not confirm casting #'s, dates, cylinder head casting#'s and dates to confirm the engines originality, to completely remove the information from the pad they would have removed a fair anmount of deck but it is possible.

Thanks

When my engine was "decked" it removed the numbers from the pad. I wasn't concerned as my car is not a numbers matching car. I could see how someone could put new numbers on the car so that it appeared as a numbers matching car.

My engine was rebuilt prior to me owning the car. When I brought it in for it's second rebuild, the machine shop would not deck the block because I would lose my numbers on the top of the block. If I'm not mistaken, isn't there another set of numbers near the fuel pump?
