BUMBERS! WTF is a bumber?
I have always found it amusing how often people mistype the word "bumper" and end up with "bumber" on The Forum. (Just search for "bumber" and you will get a page full of results.) Thinking this was merely a Corvette Forum phenomenon, I was browsing through my 1999 edition of the Corvette Black Book and read that in 1976, "two styles of rear bumbers were used."

It funny some people pronounce it bumper other pronounce it bumber. I would imagine that is where a lot of the misspelling comes from, that and too much oil and gas getting asorbed throught the skin. :D

bummer!
When I see "bumber" I am never quite sure if the person is talking about the things on the front and back of cars, or if they are having a bad hair day! ( "bummer" ) MJ

I believe bumbers are used only in New York City. When you find a tiny parking place in NY, you parallel park (if you don't double park). You back into the parking spot until your car goes "BUMB!" into the car behind you. Then you crank the wheels over and go forward until your go "BUMB" into the car in front. You BUMB back and forth between the cars until you're within a foot of the curb. You then put an "out of service" hood on the parking meter and go shopping. I LOVE NY, man!

It's sort of an example of Grimm's Law in reverse, the shifting of sounds of certain letters as language differentiates and starts to form new dialects. According to Grimm's Law, the voiceless classical unaspirated voiced stops ( g,d,b ) became voiceless stops ( k,t,p ) in English. So the regression voiceless stop of the "p" to the unaspirated voiced stop of "b" is sort of wierd, in the world of linguistics!
But in todays world, the fact that the sounds of the English language are slipping backwards doesn't surprise me. Then again, it could be a regional dialectical variant, in sound of the word. You want to hear some variations in sounds of the way words are pronounced versus the way they are spelled just come to Texas!
