Since gtr1999 raised the issue of using an old spindle (which I have), I called MidAmerica to see how the set up tool worked. It works like an old spindle. I thought you set it for the distance between bearing races, but no.

Oh well – back to try it and remove it, repeat as necessary till it fits.

You could always get an old spindle and polish it for a slip fit or have a trade school make one as a project. They aren't hard to make with a lathe at hand.

I agree with you grt1999. Even a piece of threaded rod and a little use of a lathe to turn plugs that fit into the bears is all you need. Any machine shop could quickly turn out 2 plugs.
Even before installing the spindles you could get the inner bearing surface polished to make future installations and removals easier.
Tom's advertise that the bearings are only slight press fit. Sure makes everything easier.

I have an old spindle. How do I know that the bearing races will be the exact dimension apart that my trailing arm holds them? I have never seen one of the installation set up tools. Hoe do they work?

All the set up tool it doing is sandwiching the spacers you have selected between the outer and inner bearings. Anthing that allows you to install the outer bearing the spacers and the inner bearing and then pull the whole thing together will work.
If you have a old spindle get someone with a lathe to chuck it and polish both bearing surfaces to a easy fit. Install the inner bear and it could be a press fit if you intend to leave it on, slide in into the rear carrier, slide the 2 spacers on, then the inner bearing which now is very loose, the inner flange and then the nut and tighten the whole thing up. Remember no grease when checking bearing clearances and no seals. Measure the clearance, take the whole thing apart, it will fall apart with the inner bearing beind loose on the spindle then make adjustments and try again.
Reading on play are destroyed by using grease. Grease and seals are for the final assembly.
