You will have a difficult time getting a good fix on the holes in the deck when you remove it. They may start out looking good but they eventually become visible.

Re: Should I leave the rear luggage rack on or remove(PICS) (Gotta Fix my '76)
I think it looks terrific on your car because of the color of the car. I would leave it on for sure.

I actually rather like the luggage rack, but am also in fact considering having it removed from my '73, eventually. (This is because I'll likely be installing, heaven forbid , a wing, which I bet wouldn't fit and look right at all with the rack.)
If patching it up isn't possible, how expensive do you think it would be to get a fiberglass replacement, i.e., which parts would need to be replaced? The entire back? (I'll dig up my Corvette America catalog once I get home...)

I say leave it off, but shouldn't you have made this choice BEFORE you got it painted? :jester

First thing I did when I got my vette was take the luggage rack off, mine was a little rough so it made the decission musch easier. I bought black plastic plugs and stuck them in the holes, made it look better than just having the holes with nothing in them. I think I got them in the generic interior parts section (door handles, *****, etc) section at the local parts store.

It looks fine either way. If it's aleady installed, I'd leave it there. Others are correct that it is difficult to make a perfect permanent repair on those holes.

I have heard that it is hard to conceal the holes but I think if you find a good glass man and buildup the holes the sand the excess it can be done without any sag. I have friends that build boats and stuff and they said they do it all the time you just have to replace the hole with enough material so the the sagging won't happen.

I might be a little odd here...
I prefer the luggage rack on the '74 and '75
I prefer it without the luggage rack on the '73 and earlier.
I guess it just sets off the rounded tail on the '74 and '75 better for me. The '73 and earlier have the lip on the tail to set it off.

I've never been a fan of the luggage racks. I knows it's supposed to serve a purpose on the verts but I think it messes up the smooth lines. :yesnod:

Not from personal experience but this post goes around on occasion. The last time was a poll at the CAC but this was a common theme. I don't know the answer to your other questions because after reading this I decided to leave mine on and like it. I ended up purchasing the T-Top carriers and put it to good use.

It will be almost impossible to fill the holes if you take it off. Sooner or later they will show through any repair.
I like the look either way, as long as you keep after it and don't let it get rusty. But having one on my 69 t-top I can tell you that waxing or just washing the car is a real pain.

Hmm, I'd almoast have to say leave it on. There's something about the additional chrome that sets it off. It's more of a pain to wax around, and a previous poster is probably right in saying the patched holes will show up again.
Tough call.

i think it depends..i had one on my 73 and did not mind it too much...i wouldn t think about putting one on my car now...i would vote leave it off, especially on a vert...
