Silly question: Does my 76 have a mechanical or electronic speedometer?
Tachometer is attached to the HEI ignition (as much as I remember), but where does the speedometer get itīs input from?
Is it a mechanical speedo or is it a electronic unit? And where is it attached to?
I plan on buying Autometer Pro Comp. gauges, so it would be good to know what type of gauge is the right one.. :jester
As always, Markus
BTW, The paintguy and I are already wetsanding the vette :hurray:

The speedometer is cable driven on your car. It is driven by plastic gears from the output shaft on the transmission.

Do you think it makes any sense to convert the speedo into an electronic unit?
If yes, how can this be done?

All C3's have cable driven speedo's, however the ones w/ a lockup and the L81 & L82 have a VSS unti (vehicle speed sensor)
To convert toelectronic you will need one of those. I'm not sure what tranny you have but I don't think you can put a VSS in a 350.
The C3's have a VSS that runs off the back of the speedo (it has a led and an optical sender that works w/ light reflecting from the mirror polised metal plate inside the speedo) This means you need a cable driven speedo for that VSS, a no go.
Thr 700R4 from 82 has a cable adapter but the 84+ ones have a VSS in the tranny, they are a direct swap for the mechanical unit. If you have a 700R4 running an electronic speedo is easy.

Autometer supplies magnetic pickups that have to go to a moving part, i.e. driveshaft or rim to get speed info from.
Works with a kind of reed-contact (magnetism).
How is the project progressing markus?
drop me a mail....... :yesnod:

Well, I guess it would be better to stay with the mechanical speedo, because I have a TH350 right now.

Hey! :seeya Good to see you again on the forum...
I saw Olivers post about the international corvette member meeting :jester:
Did you know that Oliver and I met each other when he was on vacation in Austria? I think thatīs really cool. The forum is a great "tool" of making contacts all over the world, beside that it is pure information for everybody.
Unfortunately I donīt have much time to hang around here, because Iīm still working on the car all the time...
Iīll send you an email!
Back to the topic for a few seconds:
Mounting a sensor on the driveshaft?
Does the speedo know about my choice of trannygear?
I donīt think so, I believe you meant the halfshafts or something that is direclty connected to the spindels, am I right?
