Modifications and Illinois Emissions Testing
Illinois state law requires me to have my '81 tested for emissions annually. Funny thing is I see many Vettes without catalytic converters. How do you Vette owners in Illinois get away with modifications that eliminate the catalytic--ie, side exhaust, chambered pipes, etc.?

Well there's a couple of ways, one their cars aren't registered where there are tests, two they have antique plates on them so there not tested.

Re: Modifications and Illinois Emissions Testing (Biker)
I'm in cook county and they do test. I'm lucky as '74 was the last year for non-cat vettes so that is not an issue. However, my motor is pretty far from stock. I get through emmisions by using one of the programs set in my Edelbrock fuel injection system that is set-up for a fast idle, retarded timing, and a very lean mixture. Runs like crap while I am getting tested, but as soon as I pull out I just recall the normal program and it runs like it should again

In Illinois, how does a car have to be in order to use antique plates?

It's 25 years and supposed to be used only for shows, parades etc. or for when it's being worked on. Mines always being worked on so that's not a problem, plus I work for a shop so I don't worry about it, I don't drive it that often anyway.

You need to be careful about that loophole. I used to work for an insurance brokerage firm that handled some of these antique/collectable policies and if you are running collector plates and get into an accident, you better be able to document what parade, shop, etc you are going to. Otherwise forget collecting on the policy:eek: .
I ended up going with Hagerty insurance as they allow a certain amount of pleasure driving without all the B.S.
