DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER
Does someone know how by looks or a number know how to identify a 4 series carrier, one that is used for 4:11, 4:56 as opposed tp the 3 series? Thanks Dale e-mail VAL56@AOL.com

Re: DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER (Dale Z)
There is DEFINITELY a difference, to use a 4 series gear (3.9-4.56) on a 3 series case you need a ring gear spacer so does that mean the 4 series carrier has a thicker ring gear mounting flange?? I think so. ..redvetracr

The differential case (not carrier) does have different part numbers. In group 5.510.
These are differential case part numbers with positive traction. (There are different differential case numbers listed for cars w/o p/trac.)
P/N 3997926 for 1963-80: 2.73, 3.08, 3.35, 3.55, 3.70
P/N 3997927 for 1963-77: 4.11, 4.56

Re: DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER (mapman)
Has anyone ever seen the 4.88 ring and pinion? It had a chev part number available only over the counter ready to bolt in a 4 series. I actually bought a set many years ago for my C2 fuelie. And they were quiet.

Re: DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER (ram82fire)
Cool. this is one of those very informative threads... Im even happier i have a 4-series now :D (4.11s) i think 4.88s would be a little nuts!

Re: DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ('79ProwlerOrange)
I have a 4.11 gear ratio, can I still have this in a 3 series carrier? or is this why I have to use the ring gear spacer? And what do you want for your 4 series?

Re: DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER (vettedreams)
Yes you need a 4 series carrier. I had a 4.11 on a 3 series. That is why I got the 4 series carrier. I was going to swap it out but I blew the ring gear right off the 3 series carrier. Never got to install the 4 series carrier. I had a 3.70 ready to go so I just put that in. I would not recomend the spacer. I paid 200 for the carrier, I'll take 175 shipped to you

Re: DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER (Gordonm)
I too have broke all 10 bolts for the ring gear. The ring & pinion are still in excellent condition, can I just bolt these to the 4 series carrier? do I need a shim kit, thanks for the info, if I don"t have to fork out to much $ I think I"d rather have the 4 series, also will it fit in my case?

Re: DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER (vettedreams)
You should be able to bolt the ring gear right up. I would check the pattern and back lash any time I have changed anything in the diff. It is just cheap insurance. You might get lucky and not have to do anything. Then again you might have to shim it one way or the other. You can't tell until it is mocked up and checked. This case will fit from 65-79 Vettes
