Default Air cleaner to hood clearance

I am sure this has been gone over more then a few times, but I see alot of people with Performer of Performer RPM manifolds on there C3s. I have an 1980 with a regular Preformer and have no hood clearance for a nice flowing air cleaner, how are you guys all doing it. High rise hoods or special air cleaners? Let me know the detailed secrets my friends... THANX

I have the Performer and a 3 inch filter. It closes is all I know, but would like to try a 4 inch filter.

I run a GM 14" chrome filter with the 3" element with the RPM Q-Jet intake on mine with the stock hood. Tried a 4" element with the Performer intake, but it had minor contact with the hood. When in doubt, get the playdough out.

Nice tip on the dough. I will probably get around to that. :)

I have a Performer on my '77 and a 4 inch filter will just fit with a low profile nut, but will make slight contact with the hood (I have no hood insulation). I went with a 3 inch filter.

It is a great idea. Make pillars of various lengths and place them on the top and on the forward section of the air cleaner/carb. Slowly lower the hood, a little more each time while checking to see how much the clay/playdough is smashed. Continue lowering/closing till your sure it clears. With this method I found 1.5" of clearance with a performer EPS and a Summit brand 3" drop base air cleaner on mine. Good Luck

Performer RPM Air Gap, 2 " LT1 or 350/350 drop base cleaner (stock part), K&N 3" with Extreme lid
Holley Avenger 770 with milled choke tower.

All under a Small Blk hood...

My old post on getting this to fit... http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=219513

I have 1/4 inch hood clearance... I use a Edelbrock Tarantula Intake with a 1/2 inch spacer and a 1 1/4 inch drop base with a 2 1/4 inch K&N Filter...
