Default what my b-day? What about the other numbers?

H18 408 74L

Why didn't GM just write specifications instead of placing a code? ;)

H 18 may mean March 18.
408 is the interior.
74L is the ext color.

Some one with a black book can decifer this better.

Mine's currently white with medium saddle. Looking for pics of original paint and interior, anyone have any?

Hi 74,
I believe the reason GM used a code to indicate a color was that the code tied that color to a particular year, and to that year's version of that color.
For example it works better to give an exterior color like Mille Miglia Red a code rather than to emboss the tag with that long name, or to just emboss the tag with Red.
An interior code had to indicate a color, but also whether it was a standard interior or deluxe interior. That too would have meant a much longer embossing.
Regards,
Alan

The code is a specification.

If the codes you mentioned are from a '74, the car was originally medium red metallic exterior with a neutral coloured deluxe leather interior. If you've been calling your interior medium saddle, now you know why they use a code instead of a name.
