Default 1968 327 Pilot Bushing

When I replaced the pilot bushing on my 68 the old bushing had the tapered end towards the engine. I placed the new one in the same way; however it's been bothering me since it doesn't seem quite right. One is flat and the other has a taper IN towards the hole-center. Which way does it really go?

I haven't replaced thousands of them, but I've always seen them "taper in" like you did yours. Chuck

Thanks Chuck, I still don't understand why tapered end goes towards the engine side? I would expect that it would be tapered so that the tranny input shaft would go in easier.
I put it in with the taper towards the engine, but it still seems curious.....oh well, at least I'm not alone.
