Just heard that it blew up. How sad. :(
Let me rephrase that.... *broke up*. Absolutely horrible either way.

I have no words I'm so stunned. You get so complacent because of the number of launches and landings that it's hard to realize just how dangerous space flight can be. My sympathy and prayers to the families of the astronauts.

I just read the story. I saw the headline and hoped it was just a communication problem. My heart goes to the families of the astronauts.
I cant beleive it made so much noise that people heard it go!!

Yeah, it is really sad that this happens. They know the job. But did they have any contact since they got into our atmosphere? I don't think they did. So something must have happened out in space. Might be a cover up for aliens. Or some sort of chemical leak on board that caused them to pass out or something.

Re: ot- space shuttle missing- no contact (patsnitrovette)
Read that this is the first time in the space program history that they lost a craft on a landing approach.
I can't imagine what these families are going to go through seeing this played out in the public like it did when the challanger was lost. Hard enough to deal with but to see it everyday for weeks whenever you turn on the TV has got to be horrible.

I saw it. First, three pieces, then more. Minutes later, multiple booming sounds, like rolling thunder. A VERY bizarre sight. I didn't realize what I was seeing. Very sad day.

Re: ot- space shuttle missing- no contact (Rolling Thunder)
I live pretty far north of where the flight pattern is said to have been, and yet I heard the sonic boom (which is not typical of a normal re-entry) right at 8am. Thought something had slammed against the house.
Seeing doppler satellite imagery of what appears to be the scattered remains of the shuttle is a very sick feeling. There's not a cloud in the sky today in NE Texas, but the radar is picking up lots of stuff over there.
Truly a sad, sad day. :( I remember vividly the shuttle explosion during take-off back in '86. I was watching it live in a high school science class. Since then, like others, it seems like these things take-off and land all the time without issue.
They have confirmed (and I heard about this several weeks ago) that on the initial take-off one of the rockets had some shrapnel come off that hit and destroyed some of the protective heat shielding on one of the wings of the shuttle itself. NASA has been saying it wouldn't be a problem on re-entry, but I'm sure that will be investigated. That, and the fact is was a 23yr old spacecraft that has seen its share of missions.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who lost loved ones today.

I would think those craft have the finest maintenance program in the world. It goes to show that Murphy's law is not a joke.
This is, simply put, terrble sad news. :(

I'll keep this on top of the board. Maybe I should just go out and work on the Vette(like I was planning) and not sit here and watch this all day, but I'm just not up to it right now.
