Brake master cylinder, can they be painted?
I'm putting four new calipers on my Vette, and I suppose it be worthwhile to put a new master cylinder on at the same time. The last one I put on rusted really badly, is there a way to paint a master cylinder that would last, and with what to keep it from rusting again?

Clean and prep real good and a shot of Eastwoods Cast Blast. Did mine 3 years ago and still looks the same.

Paint it with oil base Rustoleum. Use a small brush. Give it a couple of coats. If you ever spill brake fluid on it, rinse it off with water asap, or else the brake fluid will disolve the paint. Brake fluid is water soluable so a fair wash and rinse with water should clean any spilled fluid.

I used a high temp cast iron grey paint found at the local autoparts store. The paint worked great. Hasn't rusted for 4 years.

The master cylinder does not require high heat paint, I did mine in normal gloss black enamel years ago and never a sign of burnt paint . I also use silicon brake fluid to prevent spills from eating the paint

I painted mine using POR-15. Only been on there for about 3 months now though. So far so good.

Hay John, did you paint while it was on the car or did you take it off?

I cleaned mine down with some Denatured Alchol and a wire brush. After that i rebuild the master cylinder and coated it with some semi-black Krylon paint. I also changed to Dot 5 brake fluid at the same time. My master cylinder still looks great after a year. The Dot 5 fluid was the best change i made for my brakes. Since it does not absorb water I do not have to worry about air in my lines and the fluid going bad as often.

Absorbing water is not a necessary bad thing. Silicone does not absorb water but it lays is puddles or bubbles in the braking system. It then can be overheated and boil off to create vapor or rust if it is trapped in a low spot.
If the water is absorbed it delutes the brake fluid but there is less chance of boiling off.

The shop plans of flushing the sysytem and filling it with DOT4 fluid which is suppose to be better than DOT3 brake fluid. Anybody hear about DOT4 fluid?

killain, I was putting on a new master cylinder at the time. So I painted it before I put it on. Oil base paint is a pain to clean up after but it sticks like hell to almost anything. Covers really good. Even dirty grungy stuff. With a rough surface like a master cylinder, its no problem using a brush to apply the paint. The surface is rough anyway. On a really smooth surface like an air cleaner for instance, brushing may not look so good.
