Default Finally!! DYNO READINGS!

But they are a disappointment at this point :mad

It's sure as heck not what I needed to see, but I showed less than 275HP at the wheels. :mad  :mad

A HECK of a LOT of $$$$$ for such low readings! But the other side of the coin is the A/F readings. It's going wayyyyyy lean over 4,000 and that explains things. I used an OEM pump when she went together so next step is to provide more fuel at RPM. I need at LEAST another 50HP to justify the money I spent on this sucker!! :mad  :mad

Right now I need a recommendation for a fuel pump. Any takers?

Are you sure it is the fuel pump, unusual for a motor to run out of fuel on the dyno. There are no G forces to overcome and it only has to free flow. Do you have good fuel pressure throughout the run, you need to find out before you replace the pump.

Could it be as simple as the carb needs bigger jets ?

Do you have a regulator?

Paul we talked about this in depth at The Plank and maybe you need to first get the carb set right, you never mentioned setting the carb with the vac. guages for idle circuit then the dyno for WOT. At least you have dyno access daily, you know my story. Yeah I'll be coming down their shortely.

P.S. decided to try buffing wheels on the rims versus removal and delivery to your friends....$$$$, their not that bad.

David good to hear from ya! Well actually I don't have ''Dyno Access Daily" as many would think! Being an employee, I have to wait 'til just the right time' which means a real .... REALLY .... slow day :smash:

But yea, she is coming together! I'll put a pump and regulator on it, once I'm sure it's not the carb. Elebrock sells HIGH FLOW JETS for their version of the Q-Jet and that's my next step.

As for the pump, I will change it just because it FEELS like it's running out of gas at high rpm shift. When I do the 1-2 at 5500, it BOGGzzzzz for a second before catching breath in second. And if I shift at 5,000 to 5500 out of second, the bog in high gear (turbo 350) is intolerable. I've been driving hot rods long enough to know the "running outta fuel" syndrome. Heck, my Ex had it regularly  Oy, back on subject!

I'm gonna be in Phoenix at the races this weekend so when I come back to SD I'll have more info. (no, not racing the '76 -- yet -- )

   :smash:   :smash:

Paul,if you have the edelbrock carby, they are very sensitive to fuel pressure, before you go changing things I suggest you run a cycle with the pressure guage attached,i found that a 1 to 2 lb variation in fuel pressure had a dramatic variation in flow through the carby, the holley 750 vac sec that i now have on my 383 is nothing like as sensitive to fluctuations in fuel pressue...I suspect that you have low overall fuel pressure that only shows up abobe 4000rpm as a problem....john :chevy

Mechanical or Electric?

I like Holley pump personally, but any major manufator will do. For electric I plan to use the Holley "Blue", 110gph.

WOW I will be in Tempe/Mesa area myself this weekend ... MOM's 81st birthday. :yesnod: :yesnod:

I do in fact, plan to attend races on the West side Saturday. 1/31 to 2/2 at the Phoenix Metroplex there is a "fastest STREET car shootout" with 12 classes. The flyer I have looks like it is produced by http://www.hawaiiracing.com/ or maybe Mickey Thompson Racing.

But it should be a great show - a weekend full of Door Slammers!

Yep we do stock that pump at The Dyno Shop and I think that's the ticket. I also heard that there are high-flow needle/seats for the Edlebrock Q-jet so that may go well hand in hand with the Holley pump.

But where to mount the pump?

On the rear of the frame behind the gas tank. you want it close to the tank as possible as a pusher.

No, just the stock (but new) pump on the engine and hard line right into the carb. I'd have to cut the line to run pressure readings. Gotta figure something out though! :cuss :flag

:iagree: with Corey 68! Mounted mine on the inside rear crossmember just below the pass tail light. Also, install the regulator on the front pass inner fender and use an inline fuel filter. I've got the Holley blue pump with regulator and use the Summit chrome adjustable dual line with built-in filter at the carb; usually run ~4.5 PSI at the regulator for proper air/fuel mixture for my Speed Demon 850. Get your carb problems if any staightened out first though.

Paul, been down that path, had an edel 750 vac sec, holley blue and regulator, thats how i know they are so sensitive to pressure variations, switched to a holley 750 vac sec, plumbed a return line and got a top quality regulator, problem nearly fixed.....i nmounted the pump on the rear bumper between that and the spare tyre carrier on my 74r.....make sure it is rubber mounted,or at least properly insulated.....john :chevy ;)
