What's the going price for a '74 vert hard top?
Looking at all the modifications needed to put some kind of a decent looking & drag strip legal roll bar in this vette, maybe buying a hard-top is the easiest way out. There's a '74-'75 white(painted) hard-top on E-bay right now with a $500 high bid right now. It could be quite a bit higher by the end, but my question is again...
"What's a hard-top in good shape going for($$$) these days?"
I didn't even know that the '74-'75 was a different hard-top than the '73, '72, etc.

There are a few in the classifieds for $6-700. Joe
BTW, racers in-the-know used hardtop convertibles for racing back then because the aerodynamics were better than coupes. So, you might pick up a little top end, too.

Start at around $250 for a real junkie top. (There is a good example on ebay, buy it now for $249). The rear glass and headliner (vinyl covered particleboard parts) are expensive parts. A "decent" top can be found for around $500. The white one on ebay looks decent, but the seller should have included pics of the other side, ie the headliner. Another advantage of a white top it it wont look horrible on your car. A yellow or blue top on a red car would be painful, even if you were only going to the dragstrip! A really nice top would go for $800 - 1000. Problem is (just my opinion) even a perfect top in new condition would be unlikely to match your car's color exaclty, so why pay a premium for a top you will have to paint. Black vinyl would look good with any color vette. Shipping is very expensive. Building a crate + shipping can run $300 - 500, so if you find one close enough to you to go pick up.... jump on it!! That's what I did. :) MJ

Re: (MNJack)
I'm definitely going to look local first as I agree that the crating alone will be a mint to ship one across the country. Plus, that way I can try the thing on the car before I fork over the dough just in case it is not for a '74. I just saw the hardtop on E-bay and wanted to get an idea what the going price is. I sold a set of '81 Klipsch Cornwall speakers on E-bay and the guy out of California paid $250-$300 to have them crated & shipped. And he paid me my original buying price($1100) back in '81 for the set. So, I'm sure a hard-top with glass would be pretty expensive.
So much for chopping up the rear lid & welding stuff to the frame.... I think I'll go the hard-top route.
Thanks for the answers....

Re: (MNJack)
MNJack, I have the main part of my headliner, but not the side parts. Are they available separately? Also, there is a good sized tear in the vinyl, is that repairable, or does it have to be recovered? Joe

Re: What's the going price for a '74 vert hard top? (bgrice)
This is probably a really DUMB question from a 74R owner who has a hardtop, what is the difference in the various years.....the reason for the question is that my hard top is said by ythe prev owner to be original, obviously it is the same colour, the glass date codes indicate 73 build....the deck lid has the central hole and best yet,the gm canada information says it was delivered with a hard top.....BUT IT DOESN'T FIT so that the two side pins match to the same holes as does the convertible top,but the shape of the hard top means that it sits further back on the deck lid than the central hole by about 4".....is this normal or have i somehow got a hard top from another year?...... john

I got a realy nice black vinyl top for mine for 700. Great condition. It was found about 30 miles from my house so I was able to pick it up. I lucked out. This top came from a 75 and fits my 72. I don't think there is much difference between the years but I could be mistaken.
