Default Average cost of rear end rebuild ????

Does anyone have an idea of an approximate cost of rebuilding a posi rear end? I curious if I should have mine rebuilt or purchase a rebuilt and just pay to have it put in. Also, where is the best place to purchase a rebuilt or new rear end. Im looking to do this over the next few weeks. Any input would be much appreciated.

Thank You

Oliver just had his rebuilt. Not sure if he did it locally (Miami) or sent it out. Try IM'ing him...I know he's listening.

There is a gentleman in the Pittsburgh, PA area that does differentials, steering boxes etc. His name is Harvey Jacobs 412-264-9151. He rebuilt my diff and my neighbor's 73. He was quick, reliable, and his work is VERY good. He has done my trailing arms as well as my friend's transmission. You won't be disappointed in his work.

I removed mine from the car and took it in to have a new posi clutch, new seals and bearings installed. It cost $500 Cdn. If possible, take the diff of the car first, it will save you a huge amount of labor cost.

If you can take off the cover and look at the ends of the spline shafts for the side yokes, you will be able to see if they are mushroomed. This will (and did for me) cost you an extra hour or so labor, because if they are mushroomed, it makes them difficult to remove.

Good luck.

Not that they are the best place to get it from, because I would assume they just farm it out to somebody else, but just for a price reference: MidAmerica Designs offers rebuilt diffs for 63-82 at $800 each on a core exchange basis. New ring and pinion, any stock ratio, as long as your core is good. Plus shipping, of course.

Zip will do it for about $550 if you keep the same gears, or $795 with new gears.

It hasn't been done yet, but I've been quoted $250 for a local rebuild (plus I had to buy the pinion shaft for $20) and $375 for removal & reinstall.

Seems like a good deal to me.

Hopefully, that'll be the final price :skep:

Hey RON - just notice you are in the next town over (work in Burlington).

What is wrong with the rear now ? Anything broken / noisy ?

Depending on what is wrong, you might be able to do it yourself - or at least
part of it. I've never rebuilt a posi unit, but folks here have said that their
first time doing it wasn't that bad. I can't commit for sure, but I'd be willing to
stop by on my way home to help out - if you need another set of hands
or eyes.

We can fix it. My Dad's a TV repairman - he has an AWESOME set of tools. :jester

In about 10 years of having a shop that did a lot of Corvette suspension and brake work, including rears, I never saw one with the yokes mushroomed. Wear is very common however and requires replacement. It's a fairly easy check. Rebuilt yokes with hardened inserts on the end are available now, which they weren't for most of the time period I had the shop. One thing that people fail to realize is that when the rear suspension sags, the resulting negative camber in the rear puts extra force on the yoke ends and accelerates the wear. Worn yokes also cause the alignment to go negative because the half shaft is the pivot point. These two things working together greatly accelerate yoke wear once it starts, in additon to the fact that even the factory yokes are heat treated on the ends. I've seen em come in that had the yokes worn off to the point that the snap ring had fallen off and even the u bolts holding the inner u-joints had cut into the case, ruining the seal and making the housing where it could no longer hold the seal. I'd say that probably 95% of our differential work was yoke and posi clutch related. Many people would want to go ahead and do bearings (differential) while it was out, but usually they were'nt required and I don't recall ever replacing a ring & pinion.

Quote, "I did the differential rebuild last year and put a lot of time into doing it. I put in labor and parts then what most places, besides Tom's, would do."

What about Tom's?

If all the main parts (gears, spider gears and posi unit) are re-useable - VAN STEEL charges $500'ish for a rebuild.. In my case - the rebuild was much more expensive because I had a lot of unuseable parts in my rear end like the posi case and the spider gears which were bad... I ended up paying around $1300 - $1400 including a HD cover and a new complete posi unit.

Olivier
