Default Differential Rebuild Suggestions for my 71 BB

Hi everyone. I am faced with rebuilding the rear end and would like some suggestions on what the favorable coice for a gear set would be. I want to use the car for a daily driver and an occasional hiway trip. I dont plan on raceing the car. Currently I have a 3.55 gear set and tied to a muncie m20 4 speed. It seems that first gear is basically useless and on the hiway, the car sounds like it needs more gears. I was thinking of dropping to a 3.08 or 3.36. The car is powerd by a 425hp LS6.

Thanks in advance.

I went from a 336 to a 373 w/M-20 last year. I don't have a BB. The car does run 3200 rpm @70mph. I think a 336 would be a good gear for your setup.

GTR1999, How was the performance with the 3.36? Why did you change?

If I were you I'd keep the gears you have. You can play with tire size if you want to drop some rpms, run a P275 60,which is 28" tall. If you change your mind, tires are easier to switch than gears.

I had 4.11's behind my big block and even with the overdrive which dropped the effective ratio down to 2.8 I still wanted to drop the rpm even lower. This winter I went with 3.08 with the .68 overdrive so I should be around 2.10 effective ratio. With the 4.11's and overdrive I was at 2200 at 60 and 2500 at 70. I will now be about 1600 at 60. More in line with a big block.
So if it was me I would go with the 3.08 or even lower if you could find a set. I don't like to hear my bigblock revving. Too hard on gas.

The base 350, wide ratio 4 spd came with 336's. This was a great all around setup. I had to rebuild the differential due to wear and tear. I went with 373's partly at the request of my gear head son and also I wanted a change after 21 years of the same ratio. Reflecting back now it doesn't really matter to me, I never expect to use the car for anything but local driving anyway. It will also contrast my 72 350 auto with 3:08's. Maybe you can get a ride in a couple of cars with different gears to see how you like the response on the street and highway. Don't forget to get new speedo gears when you make the switch.

3.36's witn an M-20 would be fine, probably a comparable first gear to my M-21 with 3.55's. I had 3.36's until I broke my ring gear, posi, etc. then went to 3.55's which are a better combo with the M-21 but I wish I still had the 3.36's when I'm on the highway, it's not really a big jump either way, but noticeable.
