I've been dry fitting this nose now for what seems like a hundred f@#$%n hours!!! Is there such such a thing as perfect or do we all live with it a little off due to the nature of the car? It's DAMN close!!

All seriousness aside, considering the time you have into it already, I think
you are required to spend at least 100 more hours trying to get it better.

Is it too late to build up or sand down an edge to get it .062 +/- .001 ?

Did you have to cut the fiberglass cross bar on the surround - on top of the firewall to get the hood opening width correct ?

I think the Detroit tolerances (without my AIM) are 1/16 - 1/8 gap ==
good 'nuff. Your tolerances may vary.

The new nose didn't come wit the bar all the way across. Only about 4" on both sides. The bar was already gone from the car when I got it, as it was all in pieces. This is my first vette and I've been relying on the assembly manual. (it's a lifesaver). I've never cut any corners, I just don't know if it's even possible to get these cars PERFECT! I've heard horror stories about the way they even came off the line!

Mine has the original hood and it's very close, but then the wiper door and grille look like they were designed for a different car they fit so poorly :mad .

If you saw some of the workmanship on my C5 you would be quite happy with your hood. :eek:

I don't think anything is perfect or consistent with the bodies on these cars. I am taking the approach to get it as good as I can and when it is finished I don't look at it and say I screwed up. Yours looks pretty good to me. I had to work hard on mine also. As noted by earlier reply, the rear crossbar will have to be cut for hood gap adjustment. My biggest problem was height at the front of the hood, I had to raise front fenders about 1/2 inch off of inner fenders to get hood and front to line up. . Finally got all gaps consistent and height is correct. Remember that height adjustment along the mid section of the hood was accomplished with rubber blocks attached to lip of fenders.

When I popped the nose off of the 75, I managed to get the entire cross bar
to lift off the firewall intact !! Now, putting it all back together on the 70,
the hood opening should be dimensionally correct - but I'll probably get it all twisted or diagonalized.

Mark, how are you holding the nose in place while dry fitting ? screws,clamps,straps ?

Nothing yet, but I'll probably drill 1/8" holes and use clecos, like airccraft structural repairs use.

Looks good from here. The hood was the only perfect fitting piece on my car :rolleyes: The doors and front bumper parts were another story :cheers:

okay okay, this cross bar? I don't know what it is, but I am gonna guess it's the top, or on top of the firewall? I am about to pull my front extension off so I can try moving the front end around again. On my driver side where the front end meets the door, the gaping increases up to almost an inch towards the top, and begins to extend out from the body. The passenger side is nice and tight. Okay, I am going start in 3, 2, 1..
