Chrome Thermostat Housings
Mine is a Mr. Gasket chromie and it leaks. There is always an ounce of coolant or so, on top of the intake by #1 and it drives me nutzzzzz! :smash:
And believe it or not, I did indeed put some thought into it when I put the motor in. I purposely got one with the O-Ring design for sealing rather than a regular gasket type. Of course I can never See It LEAK ack that would be too easy :yesnod: :smash: so I just assume it happens on cool down.
It also bothers me that the neck has no rib on it to keep a hose on well. I've seen several of that type blow off on the Dyno at work although this one seems OK and the system rarely builds up any pressure at all
So where to get a chrome one with the right angle, that seals well and also has that all-important rib at the end of the neck?
Thanks! :D

Re: Chrome Thermostat Housings (SanDiegoPaul)
I got mine from ecklers and have had no problems. I'm not sure who makes it, it only says "Made in Taiwan"
It has a rubber ring type seal and the "rib" to hold the hose. Looks nice too

Another one of those annoying little problems that just don`t seem to want to go away. I reused my cast housing and just painted it an aluminum color so it would kind of blend in. No leaks. Sorry not much help I know.

I know a guy who got burned pretty badly from the hose blowing off of a chrome housing. I choose not to use them. Craig

I switched to a billit aluminum swivel housing.

Use 2 gaskets on the intake. The castings are generally poor. For the radiator hose connection, take a grinder and grind off all the chrome up to where you hose will cover. This will increase the holding power of the clamp. Good luck.

My ZZ4 looks to have come with a cast aluminum neck, it looks pretty good and is probably available from GM. It doesn't look like it is too expensive.

That was indeed my first choice. But the TVS that was in it had a broken nipple and when I unscrewed it for replacement, the threads in the housing came out with it. :nono: :boxing :cry

I had the same problem with that same housing. The problem was the crappy pot metal they're made of would corrode away around the Oring, causing it to lose it's seal. I tried an aluminum swivel unit but it's angle wasn't right without changing the upper hose. I put the original iron neck back on a couple years ago and no problems since.
