WHATS THE BEST CARB ON THE MARKET TODAY???????????
I am looking for a very good street carb to put on a ZZ4 crate engine. I have a quadrajet and have heard good things about the edelbrock replacement Q-jet. There are just so many different carbs out there and i just want you guys opinions for a good street carb that will make the car everyday driveable but still whoop butt at the dragstrip. What CFM? and what brand/type? :D :grouphug:

I think the Speed Demon 750 would fit the bill. Might be a bit big though...
You could try the Road Demon in 725cfm. A bit less power, but more streetable.

I am running the Edelbrock Performer (650cfm I think) and it's just ok in my opinion. I am thinking of upgrading to a Speed Demon but I think anything over like 600cfm is overkill on a small block (could be wrong there though! ).

For your purposes I would get an electric choke version of the old Carter AFB still sold under the Carter label, or Edelcbrock makes it too....
I would NEVER use a Holley design carb...as they are way at the top of the pack for causing engine fires...leaking ask any insurance company....
IF you plan on road racing or auto X the Carter is not a good choice, Q jet would be better.....because of hard corner bogging...but I never had a problem on any crazy maneuvers back when.....good carbs....reliable, run smooth, start easy, no leaking, easily adjustable, run like a charm right outta the box....

Demon actually makes a carb already set up for the ZZ4. It is a 650 Speed Demon and comes in both mechanical and vacuum secondaries. I think Demon makes the best carb on the market right now. I have had a Road Demon before and now have the ZZ4 650 double pumper on my vette now.

Go with demon. Everyone I've ever talked to loves them. And you'll defiantly see a power gain over just about any other carb for your particular application.

I'm putting the Speed Demon 750 on the ZZ5 Fastburn that is being installed in my vette as we speak. I too, have heard nothing but great things about these carbs with this motor.

Edlebrock has a new one out called... I think the AVS. This is the same as the performer AFB's except they have an adjustable secondary air valve.

Thanks for all the great info. For the street what CFM is recommended to support 350 to 400 HP and be great to drive everyday and still afford gas? I also want to drag and maybe autoX. Vacuum vs. Mechanical secondaries? :chevy

I would stick with a 650 Cfm for any 350 around and under 400 horse. I would recommend a double pumper with that 4 speed for more fun. You could also go with a vacuum secondary if you wanted.

Someone mentioned above that holleys where well known for leaking/engine fires. I can vouch for that, my old 750 DP leaked as long as I had it.... So far I am pleased with my demon.

Vacuum secondary, electric choke 750 CFM Holley. Can't go wrong. Probably your best bet.
Or get the Demon or whatever if you like the way they look and want to be a Cruise Night hero.

Send your carb to Lars and have him rebuild it. I am running a Lars rebuild Q-jet on my ZZ4 and I guarantee it performs just as good as a $400 to $500 Demon carb + it gets great gas mileage(if you keep your foot out of the secondaries  ). I got over 17mpg driving from my parents house in NC to VA
BTW GM dynoed the ZZ4 with a q-jet.

Went with Demon 650 for the ZZ4...mech secondaries.....very responsive....also, Demon stands behind their carbs. I had a warranty issue, went extremly smooth, very quick turnaround.

Carbs are like mufflers: a lot of making a choice is personal preference. The instructions for the ZZ4 from GMPP spec both a Holly or a Q-Jet. I used the Q-Jet. It's 795 cfm and you have to change out the rods. It is very streetable. Starts up easy, even in cold weather. Runs fine and is responsive... But, like I said... A lot of it is personal preference. If you use any brand of carb that you are familiar with and understand, it'll be easier to tune.

I've got a nearly brand new Edelbrock Performer 600 CFM electric choke that I am selling. Spring and jet kit too.
If you want to try it and compare it to the quadrajet when you get your engine before buying one, I'd be glad to let you give it a go. (as long as nobody buys it from me first) Otherwise it's just going to sit until I sell it.
Let me know. :)
