Default 1974: Can I add rear speaker mounts?

My 74 did not come with rear speakers. I am wondering if there is any metal in the rear area where I can mount brackets to attach rear speakers? I am planning on using 6x9 Kenwood speakers. I have seen someone post a way to do this by fabricating a bracket, but I cannot find the link/post in the archive area. Does anyone have that link?

Thanks in advance.

Here is a picture of my set up. The link that is up there was a verson of the instructions i had put up a few months back.. you may still be able to find in if you search for it. I had pictures of the metal pieces i fabricated in it to mount the boxes i made

Here is a picture of the template with the metal pieces attached to it to show how i mounted it. If you have any questions shoot me an e-mail. Hope this helps

Desi, I've recently installed 6x9's in the rear of my 73. The mounts are very similar to the others posted here, but mine are tucked into the corners a little further and do not use any floor space. I have pics if someone would like to post them for me or I could e-mail them to you. Craig

Jdunne, yes luckily all my speakers work great.

Justine, you have a very nice set up. I like how they blend in with the rest of the environment. Your post/link is the ONE I was really after since mine did not have rear ones initially and I have to fabricate a bracket. Would you be able to provide more info please??

Craig, can you email pics of yours please. I would like to leave maximum floor space open. We all know how tight it is back there already.

What is the depth of 6x9 speakers I can get away with?? I am going with Kenwood ones.....any issues??

Thanks :seeya

The plan i made can use just about any depth 6X9 because the way the boxes are angled gives an unbelievable amount of space to use. If you have any questions on what i did just send me an e-mail and i'll be more then happy to help you out. As for the brackets, they were the original ones but i had to bend them and drill holes in different spots to make them work, it would be just as easy to make your own. Good luck

I bought 6x9 speaker boxes from Circut City. They are angled boxes covered in carpet so the speakers sit on a slight upward angle. Since the boxes are already carpeted they stay put and dont slide around. If thier in the way, I just move them around. Just leave some extra speaker wire for some slack to reposition if ever needed.

Craig, thanks for sending the pics via email. Hands down this is the best setup I have seen this far! I like the fact that they are above the floor....

I wish I knew how to post these pics here......still new to this

If someone knows how to do that.....I think we can learn something from this one...

Several issues.
Something you guys might want to consider is that in general 6X9 are infinite baffle speakers & therefore are designed for a large box like the trunk (of a normal car) & for the limited width of the package shelf.
I think speakers (conventional) should be round. Components rec.!
Some newer coax have dome tweeters finally!
Why build a box or plate for 6X9s when you could build for 6 1/2 or 8s.

You guys have done nice jobs w/ your 6X9s. None of this is meant to run down the 6x9 speakers. I have Kenwood 6X9s in the SS since they came in a SS, fit, install quickly, etc..

Thanks Ganey. The only reason I was going with the 6x9 was because it seems like everyone uses those. But right now I am completely open to suggestions. I saw Kenwoods on sale for 45% off. (reg. $110 CAD) so decided to take advantage.

How does the rest of the gang feel about 6 1/2 or 8??

I am not a ricer so don't need anything too loud! Besides, most of the time I prefer the sound of the 350. :chevy

I got the latest Apline 6x9's. They're not cheap but man to they kick. Loud and clear and plenty off bass.
