Sealant for Gas Tank Sending Unit
On my 1980, the A.I.M. does not call for any sealant on the gasket between the gas tank and the sending unit. I replaced the strainer "sock" in the tank. However, both the sending unit and gas tank mating surfaces have some pitting caused by rust. I have cleaned up the surfaces as good as possible but they are not smooth, some pits and bumps remain.
The gasket between the tank and the sending unit is neoprene. Any comments on needing a sealant, and if so, what do you suggest. Thanks in Advance.

I don't think that you will need any sealant. Have not heard of anyone using it. I took mine out and just used the same gasket when I put it back together. The O-ring should be all you need. Maybe someone else will chime in.

If you are worried about the mating surfaces being pitted and uneven, then
I would look into the POR-15 line of products. POR-15 paints over rust and
cures to a hard surface that is glossy, and POR15 will not be dissolved
by gasoline (or anything else - short of 90% sulfuric acid). While you are
there, you may consider sealing the tank with one of their kits for ~$50.
A new tank is $200 - and you probably won't have yours out again - except to replace it.
Good luck. :seeya

I don't think it will leak either, but if it makes you feel better use a thin layer of silicone 'Ultra-Seal' on the tank surface. Good parts stores carry it.
