My car had a 10 leaf spring.
Just got through throwing out the trash and just for kicks I counted the leafs on the rear spring. 10 leaf, strange. It also does not look like the 9 leafs I've seen with the two leafs sticking out. It also looks like it has never been changed.

One of the leafs doesn't count... You have a so called 9 leaf spring.. even if there are 10

9 leaf springs really do have 9 leaves, as "HD" 7 leaf springs have 7 leaves. :)
I believe that 10 leaf springs are GM replacements.....or maybe they're used as original equipment on later rubber nose sharks. They're also "one stage" springs", i.e., all the leaves are curved. On original 7 and 9 leaf "two stage springs", 2 or 3 of the uppermost leaves are straight, and do not contact the curved leaves. Chuck

My '77 had a 10-leaf as you describe. I thought it was odd as well. The car only had 42K miles on it when I purchased it, so it was unlikely that it was previously replaced. I replaced it due to normal wear and tear.

Good to see you got it out- any problems with the bolts in the differential?
Mine had a broken one - couldn't get it out with anything!
When are the control arms coming out?

Replaced mine last year - 10 leaves! I have receipts back to the original owner and it hasn't been replaced.

Adam - Smooth as silk. No problem. I'm pulling the control arms this week.
Hopefully I will have it completely apart by the weekend.

Also forgot to note, My rare 10 leaf is now the property of the McKinney sanitation dump.

I've been thinking about putting in a new leaf spring, about how long did it take you? I have never done one before and dont know if its over my head or not.

Huh - I was just reading about the 10 leaf Corvette spring in the urban
legends forum. Maybe the fabled spring DOES exist.
Seriously, this is a first for me. I've only ever seen 7/9.
Interesting - 77 only ?
