Default Where is the best place to wire up an electric choke???

I have a Holley Street Avenger 670 on my vette, and need to hook up the electric choke. I believe it needs a constant 12 volt source. I was told the best place under the hood to find a constant 12 volt source would be the alternator wire. Where do you guys think I should tap into? Any suggestions or pics would be appreciated

I forgot all about the wiper motor. Do they get power even when the wipers are not on??? I don't know too much about the wiper system.

I used a spade connector and pushed it in along side the brown
wire on the heater motor plug. Only on with ignition and directly
behind the choke. Steve

On my 67 the choke wire ran to the coil. I removed the carb and have installed a Holley 3810. I had to buy the choke parts and new fuel line. Cranked it up after putting in fresh gas and runs excellent. Started it up 30 minutes ago after sitting for 6 months and now I'm ready to drive.

You have several good choices and one bad choice:

First, don't ever run the choke wire to the coil. On non-HEI cars the coil is powered through a resistor wire, so hooking up the choke to the coil will result in the choke opening too slowly or not at all due to the lowered voltage.

The alternator wire is a good choice. As Clem points out, make sure you identify the one that goes "hot" when the key is in the "run" position - not the other wire which stays hot in the "off" position.

The windshield wiper motor is also a good source. The wiper motor is hot anytime the ignition is in the "acc" or "run" position (the wiper switch provides a ground for the motor - not power - since the wiper motor is hot at all times in the "acc" and "run" position). The thing to remember about the wiper motor source is that you will put power to the choke when you're in the "acc" position. You can use this to your benefit if you want to pre-open your choke prior to starting the engine (flick over to "acc" for a minute, and then start the engine if you don't want the choke to stay on very long). But it's a disadvantage if you're sitting in your car listening to the stereo in the "acc" position while your wife is shopping.... you'll be pulling a bit of current through the choke.

The best way to hook it up is to run a dedicated wire through an available firewall opening/grommet and tap into a fuseblock "IGN" spare terminal.

I'll probably tap into the yellow wiper motor wire. I'm not worried about it getting power when the car is in "acc", since I never listen to the radio unless the car is running (the aftermarket stereo and amp suck up a lot of juice :yesnod: )
