Default Engine pulling question:

One head is off. One head is on. Which option is better for pulling the engine?

1) Securely bolt other head on and use accessory holes to bolt the load leveler chains to the engine.

2) Remove the head that is on the engine and use the head bolt holes instead.

Thanks!

I've pulled several engines with one head on and one off. The difference in weight from side-to-side is not significant enough that you can't yank the motor. Just chain it up and yank it out - no problem.

if you don't wnat the asymetrial engine removal, I'd pull the other head. You'll probably need it removed anyways right?

You don't NEED to remove it, But for the sake of balance and the ease to remove it. I would do it.

Lars, you'd say one side to the accessory bolt holes on the head and the other to the head bolt holes in the block?

I'm just checking because it's a strange situation why one head is on and the other is off. The one that is off has a stripped out bolt hole in the block that I'm trying to repair...the bolt hole is under the vacuum brake booster.

Thanks! (Wishing I was still in Colorado...it's warmer and Lars is right there)

Oh Damn - looks like you decided to pull the motor to drill and tap the head bolt threads.
I finally stopped on my way to work and got a few shots of the break booster
mounting area/ pedal assembly/ etc. I guess yo uwon't need pics of this stuff, now.
Lemme know if you do. :seeya

Yes...I did a little more thinking and looking and thinking and...well, came to the conclusion that 6 bellhousing bolts and 2 engine mount bolts were better than the brake booster, as just the brake booster wouldn't guarantee access to the area I need to get to.

I agree with Lars. With a leveler you can easily balance the motor if you want to leave the one head on. :yesnod:
