To Flex...Or Not To Flex?
Hi Group...I'm very new to the forum so forgive me if this is a redundant question..I am curious to know if anyone has used or is using one of those light weight aluminum multi bladed flex fans. I've heard they are noisy and have been known to fly apart. I kinda like the look and hear that they cool alright but I'd like to hear what the knowledgeable people in the forum think. Thanks Folks

I have one on my Camaro and it's noisy. I don't like it very much. I've seen the aftermath of one coming apart, but have never had it happen. I'm using the original GM clutch fan in the Vette and have no problems with it, other than it hits the shroud from time to time, but I don't think that's the fan's fault.

I put one on a previous Stingray and two hours later put my stock clutch fan back in.
It made WAY too much "noise" and couldn't keep the car cooled down.
That's just my experience. Never tried using one again.

A leading hot rod magazine did a test a few years ago on horsepower consumption by the fans. It turned out that the stock factory clutch type fan required less horsepower than all the trick fans. While the flex fans may look cool (no pun intended) I question their reliability especially in a high rpm environment. If they're thin enough to flex they're thin enough to break IMHO.

I got a stainless steel one, looks good hanging on my garage wall. :) I went elec to get rid of the shroud, not sure if the flex fan did anything one way or the other.
