Hi All,

It's been bitter cold here, and one of these days I had to pour some oil in the engine and noticed how at these low temperatures the oil is as thick as differential fluid. It must be really hard to get the oil flowing early in the morning, so I was wondering if it wouldn't be smart to get some sort of oil heater. Do you guys have any experience with that? What type works best? Any advice will be very welcome.

Pedro, I don't have an oil heater, I have an NOS GM Water Heater. This is what GM recomends to use to prepare an enging for starting on a cold morning.This also gives you an up on getting heat iin the car too! JIM

Pedro, it is a replacement freeze plug. Just remove one of your frezze plugs at a convienient placeand install it. Then there is a plug and wire that plugs into the heater and can be removed for summer or other times of non use, and the other end plugs in to 110volt. This is the same thing many Diesel trucks use for cold weather.

Pedro, there are other styles available. One is a magnet that sticks wherever you want it to. You could stick to the oil pan but I think its general idea was to heat the block and water also. The only oil "Only" heater I ever saw was in JC Whitney and it replaced the dip stick.

Thanks, Jim. I saw the dipstick and that magnetic heater in JC Whitney, together with a couple of other types. Was wondering which one would work best... The magnetic type seems very practical, and there's also one that warms up and circulates coolant, which seems interesting.
