Are C3 prices going up?
I periodically window shop at several sites such at Collector Car Trader Online. I have not looked in some time, but tonight I visited the site and put in my usual search criteria: 1968-1971 and $16000-$22000.
While over 150 cars came up, very few were BB verts (matching or non matching).
I changed my price range from $22000-$25000, and 50 cars came up, a lot of which were BB verts.
I realize that asking and getting are two different things, but have prices moved up? When I was looking last year there seemed to be more BB's in the high teens, low twenties than there are now.
I am trying to decide how underwater I am going to be if I rebuild instead of repair my engine woes.

Re: Are C3 prices going up? (hudman)
It seems prices are rising. When I first started searching for mine ('73/'74 SB/AC/Auto/Convertible) in the Winter, '01, my ceiling was $12k and there were many nice cars to choose from. I waited until fall of '02 to purchase and couldn't find ONE under $12k. I finally "settled" for my "fixer" and now wish I had spent a few extra bucks to buy one already restored.

It seems that for every production car, the 10-20 year age is the most difficult. C4s are very nice cars. I'm not "dissing" them, but every once in a while I see one on the road that is getting close to being a project car. Of course, there are other C4s that look pristine.

:iagree: The C3 is just starting to emerge from its mid-life crisis, while the C4 is just enetering this phase of the cycle...

But you see, the differance between C3, generally last of the carb'd cars, and still easy to mod into modern era.......and C4 which is all junked up with lousey electrical construction practices...and high failure rate on a whole bunch of fronts.....
WHEN the C4 computers and other electronic devices are no longer available, as surely will happen in a few years......well, the car is terminal...game over...
for the C3 it's allready happeneing with small items like WSW delay boards...
I know that's a simple work around for an ET, but when engine computer goes and or wiring becomes ragged on a whole bunch of fronts....
much less some of the rest of the C4....

Well, guys - feel lucky or not ?
Our beloved C3s are becoming less project cars (hobby) and more collectors
items (business). The next 5 years will probably see me finishing up the C3
resto and taking her out for the occasional pleasure cruise. I used to
commute in it - perhaps those days should come to an end. At this point, I
will likely start looking for a cheap(but solid) C4 project.
Lucky - the C3s are 'going up'
Unlucky - it's not just a sports car anymore
Gene - as the C4s mature into classics and antiques, I think you will see the
restrictions lifted on them - in regards to modifications from original
equipment. So, the relatively unreliable electronic systems may become
a problem - but maybe just for the NCRS folks. NH is pretty lax on vehicle
inspections - if you go to the right place. Without emmisions etsting, I don't
think they even open the hood up here. C4 + crate motor + carb !!!

RB Dave, eheh...I won't forget>>>snicker....I think with the current safety/emissions climate in kalifornia being what it is, it's likely the rest of the country will just have more of that in future...not less....not optimistic anyway....
NOW having said that....it's not just emissions....it's entire electronic sub assy's that depend on CHIPS those chips are too custom and as such NOT availagble to anyone off the shelf....for someone to actually reverse engineer one of those computers, and produce a replacement well.....i'ts NOT happening...not over a few vettes, anyway....that and the wiring maze...we think OUR cars are bad....take a C4-5 apart and just LOOK at the maze....
thing is...in reality, beyond say my fuel injection there has been painfully little gains for the complexity that knocks it off the road....
I have allready worked on a C4 that spent significant time at the beach...
equivalent to snow/ice/salt/rain up north....not pretty...

While I would love to have a C5, and even somewhat considering getting a C4 in the future as well, I must say I would be VERY upset if something like a tire pressure warning sensor fried my whole electrical system! :) :jester

I sure hope the prices are getting higher! And I especially think that the pre-low compression engine C3's will increase at a faster rate. Well, at least I'm holding out for that!

I pay more attention to late model C3s than early model C3s (1968-1975) and notice the 78 Pace Cars going for $30k! It seees like just yesterday when they crossed the $22k barrier. That brings the entire group up.
78 Silver Anniversary cars going for upper teens...yes prices are going up!

Re: Are C3 prices going up? (hudman)
Just FYI,
2 months ago I purchased a '69 BB 'vert. It was recently restored (not to concours condition, but _everything_ works, everything looks really nice and is in good shape, engine/suspension/brakes/etc had ~1000 miles on it). I paid low $20s for it. I don't think I got some super-duper screaming deal, but I also don't think I overpaid.
