Yes, don't crank the engine in the future.

Sorry, cold/bored and that was just too good to pass up.

Chrome won't last long on headers. Mine was gone in a little over a year. I think next time I will go Jet Hot..

I feel your pain :( I learned to live with the disscoloration of the tubes near the heads until the rest of the header all the way to the sidetube took on a gold tint :U Off to Jet-Hot they went...not as  as chrome but bulletproof :smash:

Bluing of the tubes near the heads is normal with chrome but it doesn't diminish it's protective qualities. The chome isn't burning off, it's just changing color. My headers have been on the car for 8 years and no sign of rust or corrosion. They're blued within about 18" of the heads but the chrome still looks like new beyond that point.

There's not a lot you can do about it. As stated above, the chrome is still OK. I've had this problem with my bike for years. The only way I know of to prevent the blueing is to insert a long coil of thick (1/8") copper wire inside each pipe. This carries the heat away & dissipates it more evenly, but messes up the flow characteristics, so some people used to wind it around the outside of the pipes (a lot of Classic racers did that). That also stops or delays the blueing, but looks horrible & is a good way to promote rust. Big bore pipes will reduce discoloration, but messing up your power characteristics is a bit extreme just to prevent pipes from blueing! There's a metal polish called Solvol Autosol which will remove the blue after a lot of "elbow grease". After using it the area that was blue looks a bit like silver with mottled patterns in it & the polish is abrasive, so you can wear through the chrome (will take a long time to go through it, but I've known people that have). I just leave mine alone, people can then see its used in anger & not just used as an ornament :D

I don't have chrome headers but I do know that when I put new pipes on my Harley they were blue by the time I got back from the first ride. I have heard that they can blue from running too rich ona bike but I don't know on a vette. On the bike I got chrome heat shields and they have held up great.
