Water pump growl???

Water pump growl???
Is it normal to hear a growl from the pump when engine is idling? I thought it was my fan clutch, was ready to replace, pulled the clutch off, tightened the pulley nuts and started car and the growl is from the pump. I had it off last year, checked for play (none) so I reinstalled. I probably should have replaced then. :(
BTW there is no p;ay in the shaft. :cheers:
