[OT] $175,000 for a bogus Shelby?
Lots of opinions on Reggie Jackson's cars at the Barrett-Jackson auction, so I'll toss another ball in the ring...
How about that GT350"E" that was used in that plotless yawner of a film, "The Fast and the Spurious" or whatever it was called. What did it sell for -- $175,000? When they opened the hood, I realized something was very wrong because I saw a modern alternator, electronic ignition, and a few other contemporary goodies. I couldn't quite understand what the announcers were saying, but I got the impression that this is a "new" old Shelby...or whatever.
Personally, I would have gone for the '63 Cobra 289 -- it was a much nicer car and a relative "bargain" at $140,000

that car is a replica of the car that starred in the remake of gone in 60 seconds(with nicolos cage) it is just a 67 fastback with a $5000 bodykit and a new engine. i agree that it was not worth 175 000 because i did the math a few years ago and i could build that exact car(minus the shelby engine for less than $25,000 canadian!! if anybody is interest in getting the kit heres the link

Re: [OT] $175,000 for a bogus Shelby? (page62)
I was watching the auction with my son, and I told him I would not buy that car. That I believed it to be bogus.
Several years ago Carroll said he found some originial Cobra frames and parts he had forgot he had stored in a warehouse, and he was going to complete them and sell them for $500,000 each as originial '60's Cobra. His friend and business partner at the time revealed this hoax and they wound up in court. The best I remember is he could not register and sale these as originial. The B/J Auction did state it could not be registered in the state of Calif.
What does anybody else remember about this.

I think the car couldnt be registered in Cali cause of emissions. As far as the GT500E ,that thing is BadAzz.I want one so bad I can taste it .Ill have to build one ,I cant afford that price.Ive been following these cars since the movie and the company that builds these are selling them for 80k to 150k.The one that went up for auction was a 80k car .I guess the guy just wanted the first one

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If i remember correctly Carrol had some unused serial# or tags left over from the 60's so he had a chassis builder weld up some new frames and left them outside to age, er rust and then remembered   that he hadn't finished some cars  :bs these are apparently known as continuation cars, sometimes there's a lot of funny stuff going on in this hobby. On the other hand some of the Cobra replicas are really nice there's one around here with a 427 S.O.H.C. motor that's something you don't see everyday
Ken

bama,
The story I read was that Shelby wanted the people from AC cars in England to make some old AC chassis and bodies on the "old body bucks" and ship them over here as sewing machine parts where "old Shel" would set them out in the desert to age and he was then going to claim to have found them in a wharehouse he had all these years for storage.

Re: [OT] $175,000 for a bogus Shelby? (page62)
Get this (!) . . . it sold for $194,400! I would have flipped it over for one of those Boyd Rods. $194K for a Ford "clone"?
And what about that Nash Bridges Cuda coming in at $148,500?
"Poor" Reggie got greedy with only a $275K bid for his 69 ZL-1.
Must be nice to have money, eh? :smash:

HAH! I remember they tried to sell all the Cuda's from the nash bridges show last year at auction in san francisco. Couldn't get squat for them because they were so beat up. Someguy probably bought them and made a nice penny. No harm in helping rich stupid people give their money away! I'm sure they make it a tax write-off anyways!
