Re: '68 L88 gets $125k at Barrett-Jackson (BobJ)
I thought that wnet pretty cheap.. the 69 427/435 went for almost as much. The L-88 was an unmolested car, I would have thought it would be worth way more...

That was a beautiful 68. Just goes to show you what the L88 really means L$$.
One that struck me as high was the '54 vette custom - not stock - for 110k or so.
How about that Chevelle that went out for 72K - they said the owner had
125k into it !! You guys in FL get to go soon - West Palm in April.

Re: (MNJack)
I saw the car in person yesterday. The car was fully documented but it was hit at some point and the car was repainted. The engine appeared genuine. The seller bought the car from the original owner 9months to flip the car. I think if the car had original paint and no body damage history it would have brought upwards of 150K.

Re: '68 L88 gets $125k at Barrett-Jackson (BobJ)
I've had a 69 L88 since the mid 80's and it was a local car here when new and I tracked it down and restored it, taking it to Bloomington for the L88 reunion in 1988. A close friend got bit by the L88 bug about this time and we went looking for a car for him. We found a car in Missouri and flew out and bought it. The car had THE original engine and 8K miles and original paint. It had been in Bloomington's Special Collection sometime before my friend bought it, mid 80s I think. We took the car to Bloomington in 1989 and it was the first L88 to ever recieve the "Survivor" award. For business reasons, my friend found it necessary to dispose of his 2 cars several years ago, approx 1999. (might've been 98) The L88 was advertised in Hemmings as well as the Dupont Registry and also listed with Mike Kitain. To make a long story short, after approx. a year of effort, the car finally sold for about 90K. With the history/documentation on this car, I found it a little surprising that the 68 went for 130, even at BJ when the buyer's 8% fee runs the price to over 140K. I hope that's where the market is now, but a little surprised still. As far as my car, it was judged at Bloomington in 1988, and has also rec'd multiple NCRS Top Flights, and a Performance Verification. It also got multiple awards at the Big Block reunion in Knoxville in the early 90's. The best real offer I ever got for it was 85K. I'm not interested in selling mine, but it's nice to see where the market is anyway. Pro Team, as high as his prices seem, has had several 68 & 69 L88's fairly recently for under 100K also.

I've been fortunate to have seen quite a few L-88s... Never even heard of this on, much less seen it. Must have had a couple dozen calls from potential buyers (or their representatives)... Nobody I talked to seemed to have any specific information. Really weird since these cars tend to draw a lot of attention anywhere they show up.
As far as who bought it... Well, it wasn't me! :) I have gotten serious about my L-88 search though... I put one of my cars up for sale and will have another one advertised soon. If all goes well, I hope to be in a position to do something by the middle of the year. I'm looking for a 1969 so it would have to be a VERY special 1968 to get me to change my mind (the only '68 I know of fitting that description is WAY out of my league).
SBR,
I'd be very curious to hear the details on the '68 in question since you saw it in person. General condition? Any documentation? Owner history?
Solidlifters,
You're right on the money as usual... There are plenty of outstanding 1968-1969 L-88s put there for less than $100,000. Granted, the majority of them will be coupes, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The price paid for the '68 at Barrett-Jackson might have been a direct result of "auction fever"... :)

Re: 1968 L-88 at Barrett-Jackson (Rowdy Rat)
Rowdy, when you get serious about an L88, it might be worth a call to see if the one my buddy sold is available. It's a Monaco Orange (exact same color as Hugger Orange in 69) and has about 90% of the original paint. The part that's been spotted is the result of some idiot painting the tail light panel flat black early in the car's life. I spotted it in laquer in late 80's and it was virtually undetectable. This car had less than 9K miles when it left here and was a late 69, meaning it had the second design, open chamber L88. It had THE original motor. I believe that the guy who bought it may be more of an investor than a true collector and it might be worth a call to see if the new's worn off.

Re: 1968 L-88 at Barrett-Jackson (Solidlifters)
Stan, the car had the following documentation, bill of sale, window sticker, tank sticker and I believe the POP. As far as condition I personally thought that the car would show better than it did plus the fact that it appeared to have been in a fender bender and was repainted and was in fairly rough shape. The engine appeared original. I personally would not have bid over 90K for that car. Hope this helps. Thanks for talking me out of that car and keeping my 69. See you at BG Regards, Steve

Solidlifters,
Thanks for the information on the Monaco orange L-88. If all goes well with the sale of the cars mentioned in my prior post, I'll take you up on your offer to give your buddy a call... Sounds like one heck of a nice car!
Steve,
I appreciate the feedback on the '68 at Barrett-Jackson... Maybe one of these days I'll get to see it in person. It sounds like the price was a bit out of line considering the condition of the car.
As far as your current car, I think you'll be looking a long time before finding a better one!
On another Barrett-Jackson related note...
Saw another 1971 LS-6 sell for under $50,000... Third one in as many months. Those LS-6s have got to be one of the best buys out there right now... I don't know, maybe I should follow my own advice! :)

Re: 1968 L-88 at Barrett-Jackson (Rowdy Rat)
Stan, thanks for the compliment on my car. As far as LS6s go I agree that they are undervalued at the moment. I did not see the one at Barrett Jackson but I heard that it was a nice looking car but was not originally a red car. Perhaps that was why it traded below 50K
