Default Final Rear End update!!! Rear End Rebuilt....

Friday early morning - I drove 280 miles to Clearwater (Tampa area) to have my differential rebuilt at Van Steel.. (For those who didn' read my previous posts.. there were some noises and vibration coming from the differential - especially in sharp turns. I changed the positraction fluid and added additive but the clonk didn't go away...)

Well - I arrived at 7:30 AM in Clearwater... The immediately started to work on my car.. Withing an hour - my differential was already removed and taken apart   (HOLY SPEED)... (well - there were 3 guys working on it.) When they took my differential apart - they noticed that my posi unit was cracked and on each of the spider gears - one tooth was missing.... I really got lucky that I made it to them... My differential could have blown up at any time.(locked up ... and you can imagine the consequences). Luckily the gears were ok... They replaced the posi uint with a aftermarket heavy duty unit because the GM unit tends to crack... Well - it wasn't built for Drag Racing... Before 1 PM - the car was already finished... WOW....
Today - I already put the rebuilt differential to the test... I will post results in another thread...

Olivier

Well - the whole thing cost me around $1250..

However - I went with a aftermarket upgrade posi unit which was $400... I also had a heavy duty rear end cover installed... $90...

When they rebuilt the rear end.. they also told me that I had 3.73 rear gears... I always thought that I had 3.55's...

When they took my differential apart - they noticed that my posi unit was cracked and on each of the spider gears - one tooth was missing.... I really got lucky that I made it to them... My differential could have blown up at any time.(locked up ... and you can imagine the consequences).
Been there, done that. When I was a teen, my '64 fuelie's posi puked. As I desperately babied it home, it would randomly lock up momentarily and release. I was sweating by the time I got it into my parents garage. When I opened the case, even the posi clutch springs fell out. Nothing was salvagable.

Everything in the posi unit was worn... I got soooo lucky that I was able to drive 280 miles with the damaged unit

Don't remember the brand... I will receive the box of the new unit containing the old cracked unit.. I can also call Art to ask again what the brand of the new posi unit was...

Just curious. Whenever you get a chance just post it. Mine is OK right now but you never know when it will let go. Just want to be prepaired.
