Anyone running an Aluminum driveshaft?
I am putting in a TKO 5 speed and am thinking of getting an aluminum drive shaft made rather than cutting the stock one.
What do I need to consider besides the center to center measurement? Would the e-brake pulley clear? Where did you get yours? Approx cost?
Thanks
Chris

Re: Anyone running an Aluminum driveshaft? (71roadster)
Chris, I haven't done the leg work yet but, by having to use the Mark Williams Detachable Yoke with 3350 joints I was going to get an Aluminum Shaft and cut it down to fit the Vette and change the rear yoke on my Dana so I can use the same joint on both ends.
I have looked at the yoke and found one a Denny's for my Dana rear.
I see no reason it won't work. JIM

I do but it's on the Formula I just bought today!
But I am also going the 5 speed route on m 73 and hate to cut a good drive shaft that could be used by a forum member doing an auto to 4 speed swap. Keep us informed on it goes.

I'm currently installing a late model vette version on my 78. Check in your area if someone can cut it though. There is only one place in Dallas that will cut them.

Chris,
You may already have this, but here's a link to a company that makes aluminum driveshafts and halfshafts. So info there on measurements as well.

I don't have an aluminum drive shaft but I do have a 3.5" diameter Mark Williams shaft and yoke. The only reason I am responding is that I assumed an aluminum drive shaft would also be at least 3.5" in diameter. The Mark Williams shaft was a very tight fit in the tunnel. I had to do a little clearancing to get it in without rubbing. I now have about .030" clearance and all is well.

Cutting an aluminum shaft is not the problem. It is welding the new yoke in. I wanted to go that route but 2 drive shaft shops discouraged me from going that route.
I also feel that 3 inch is as big as you want to go. In another post someone went 3.5 inches but he mentioned .030 clearance and any flex in the engine transmission can eliminate that clearance. Evne with 3 inch I had to clean up the tunnel a little.

Yes Yes Yes! Aluminum has excellent "flexing" characteristics (ie. it can absorb the shock of high torque without breaking). I went with the 3" 6061T tube and still have about 1" clearance. No problem with e-brake etc. Got mine from http://www.driveshaftshop.com in NY. It was around $265. Harmonics are also different so I don't notice as much vibration as I used to.
